Starting trouble AND engine cuts off while riding

Hi all,

I have a 2001 Ducati 750 Monster Dark. Am having trouble starting the bike. I press the start button, but nothing happens(no engine noise, nothing).. after many tries, it will start. Also, after riding a few minutes, the engine cuts off. Sometimes, it will start right backup, at other times, I have to wait a while on the side of the road to get it to start again.

I have changed the fuel filter, engine kill unit, and the ignition kit.

Am at a loss here, can someone help me please?

Thanks,

-Suresh

First step is to stop changing parts. This can get very expensive and you may still have a malfunctioning bike when done. Second step would be to do a search on this board. I'm not trying to be nasty about the search, I am simply to lazy to type the whole trouble shooting sequence. You also want a wiring diagram and a multimeter.

Howie is right. Stop throwing money at it in parts. It may be a simple connection problem or a bad wire who knows. You must diagnose first. A cheap test light could even get you started but a mulitmeter would be better.

Just start at the starter. ;D while the bike is having the problem push the starter button see if there is power at the starter if not move upstream to the solenoid and continue check for voltage backward until you reach the ignition switch.

My dealer pounds it in to the heads of his customers..."Ducatis need a good battery, fully charged, clean and tight connections."

Sounds basic but with a Duck, that is the very first place to start...no pun intended.

I had a very similar problem once with my bike. It was caused by a broken ground from the kill swtch. It was actually broken inside the wiring harness next to the steering head. If memory serves, the wire was spliced there - a crappy splice that broke.

The symptoms were just as you describe - sometimes would take multiple tries to start, and sometimes it would sputter/die while riding. Eventually, I realised that the problem really only happened when I turned the bars to the left, which made me look for a shorted wire. In the past, I've heard from 2 or 3 other folks that had the same exact problem.

I have been having a similiar prob myself .I'll turn the key on and the lights will come on.When i turn the engine kill switch on my fuel pump will not always prime and the starter will not engage. I have found that by jiggling my fuses this will solve the problem and the bike will start right up. One time after this happened it stalled out on me after i had rode about 20 feet and i had to giggle the fuses again . i will see if i can take care of it today.Check and see if you have headlight and taillight and if you hear your fuel pump priming.

I had a cut out whilst riding problem on my 1995 M900. Synder said" replace the small yellow cube under the seat and that cured the problem. It is an ignition relay and breaks down once bike warsm up.
