Stall when downshifting . . .

twice now . . . once approaching a light at very moderate speed; i guess i wanted to make more noise when approaching the light so i decided to downshift into first, not something i normally do as first can be kind of rough. it stalled. i was able to coast into a parking lot and restart the bike fine.

second time, on the freeyway approaching an off ramp. traffic slowed to about 45 mph and i downshifted from third into second, again, probably to let cars around me know i was there, but nothing too agressive or out of the ordinary. stalled on freeway. was able to restart right away while rolling about 20 mph.

called my local dealer where i bought the bike (still under warranty). tech guy had not heard anything like this. the only thing that i noticed different about bike is that i tend to notice more noise in the lower gears, especially second and first . . . i've heard some odd rattling sounds before, when slowly shifting out or into first or second and i do get a few false neutrals (or rather false first gears— bike should be in gear but rolls like its in neutral) etc. i attributed this sound to ducati's design and i figured that i needed to be a bit more aggressive when shifting, popping it into gear rather than lightly shifting (this is pretty standard on most bike, especailly harleys . . . ).

anyone else experienced this? taking bike in for a looksee next week.

I have had the symptom as described by the OP a couple of times since I got the bike...until today. 3 times on the way into work (4 KM) this morning the bike stalled. The first time it really, really didn't want to re-start and just started as the advance green for the opposite direction ended and allowed me to go. Whew! Then I made my turn and got to the next light and as I was gearing down again I pulled in the clutch to stop and it stalled again. This time it started right back up. I had to stop at a few more lights and stop signs and had no problems until I slowed down to turn into the parking lot at work and the bike stalled again. This time the engine light came on as well but it still started right up again. I got into the office and called the dealer and basically demanded an appointment for tomorrow so I'm taking it in to have them go over it.

It seems to me that once it warms up the revs drop too low when you pull in the clutch, basically creating the conditions for it to stall. Seems to me that even though I'm supposed to have the "latest" firmware (according to the dealer when I took it in for it's oil change 6 weeks ago) the idle mix is way too lean. Maybe I can make them put a Rapid Bike tuner in it!:smile

If you know how to sync throttle bodies, I'd try that. If not, ask your dealer to do it. Throttle body "adjustment" (sync) may be on the list of maintenance items for the 1000km service so look at that first.

Stalling when pulling in the clutch (or chopping the throttle quickly) in any gear at any speed has been a known problem for other makes, and the throttle body sync was the remedy.

Good to know. It doesn't happen all the time to me, but when it does it happens more than once on the same ride. I think I make it worse when I try to rev match on down shifts, which I tend to do more after I've just ridden the Sportster (which would have the back end passing me going into the corner if I didn't rev match!).

Just to report back in case anyone else was having the issue. I just had my full Termi system installed on Saturday and it fixed the issue, however during the install and map update they did say there were 2 other ECU updates involving fuel mapping and throttle, so I don't know which of these fixed the problem conclusively, but it's worth a check to see if you need those updates. I do know the Termi update fixed any doubts that this bike is truly a Monster haha, they are well worth every penny!

Just so that everyone knows the exact test scenario I used to see if it was stalling I was able to get mine to consistently stall by cruising at approximately 40MPH, down shifting aggressively to get the revs up to over 6k, then clutching in, this would cause the engine to sputter and stall. Less aggressive downshifting would cause it to sometimes stall and sometimes just sputter and restart and the lights would flicker. Repeating the exact same steps with the ECU update and full Termis has no issues, revs stay consistent once clutch is pulled in.

everybody i know here locally with a monster 1200s has this issue including myself. dealerships here have tried everything from charcoal canister removal to injectors to tps sensors and even whole ECU interchanges. nothing will fix it, after a while bike will randomly start stalling again. we have come to the conclusion that it is the ECU map. the latest updated available map WILL NOT fix it. we've complained to ducati USA and they dont care.... they assured us that the bike has been blessed by the pope and tutto bene! lol JK
the only map that seems to fix the issue is the one that comes with the termis.

so you have two options 1. learn to live with it. or 2. spend the $1600 for the termis.

Well, this sucks. My dealer has gotten zero support from DNA. During one ride it stalled while the tech was wearing the diagnostic back pack. They made some sort of adjustment and reflashed it with the current map. It was ok for a ride or two then it was back to its old self. What doesn't make sense is those who have reflashed and claim the problem is no more. Not questioning the integrity of any member of this forum. If we all have the same product why does it fix some and not others?

Aaaaaand...i have the stalling thing also, 2014 manufacturing date, 2015 M.Y, bike has the latest FW update, took it to the dealer, they reset the TPS but still no go (little bit better than yesterday though).

is there actually a remedy about this ? I'm not giving Ducaudi another 1500€+tax for the Termis and up-map for the "privilege" of not having my bike stalling, ****'s dangerous to say the least and a rapidbike is also out of the question.

What's the proper, official (i.e: Ducati's ) solution ? Last post in this thread is from January, do we have an update about this ?

Officially, the bike has no problem, at least according to Ducati North America. Mine stalls when I ride aggressively and then brake aggressively...then bwaaaa. If I'm lucky I can pull the clutch in and restart it then keep going. But then there are the times where it stalls and the only way it will restart is to put it in neutral, turn off the key, turn on the key then retry starting. Lots of fun in the middle of a busy road at the lights with cars piled up behind you!

Oh, ya Rosso I forgot to mention; try not to rev match on this bike. It just exacerbates the problem. You have to let the slipper clutch do its job. I keep forgetting and I either stall this bike or the back end tries to pass me on the Harley.:wink
