Hi guys,
We're looking for a few colorful bikes and riders for a photoshoot
on Friday March 3rd in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The shoot is for
T-Bags, makers of travel bags for motorcycles. We are looking for
red, blue, or yellow Monsters because the bags are made from
black cordura type material, so we want contrast. The shoot is for
advertising on their website, and national print ads. (Road Bike, AMA etc.)

You will be required to sign a model release. Compensation will be
your choice of a Magnetic Tank bag, Shuttle Pack or Navigator.
See them at http://www.t-bags.com/

To be considered please email me with one picture of your bike.
I will contact you with further info. Here is an example of a past
cruiser shoot and the resulting ad:

Thanks, froghair

Do you know what the market value of what you are asking for is? Maybe you should consider upping the pay a bit...

a "free" $160 tank bag isn't such a bad deal...

If they were paying what the commercial photo market normally pays for what's being asked for, you could buy at least ten $160 tank bags...
well, i guess you'll either get the $160 tank bag or nothing at all. you'll sure teach them. ::)

why not suggest what they should pay you/us... that way they have an idea of what your price is.

They already know. I'm just guessing here, but the photographer likely won this job because his/her estimate bottom line was cheaper than other contending photographers. He/She was probably cheaper because they are counting on using street talent (or talent found on the DML) that aren't aware of what they should be making for a company to use their likeness in order to sell a product. In any business, when competition is based only upon the bottom line, the industry as a whole suffers. In other words, sacrificing the quality of a picture or campaign in order to undercut the competition is slowly destroying the business that I rely upon to pay my Duc bills. That's my point in a nutshell.
What does it have to do with Derby as a potential model? Not much. If you need some nice riding luggage, I say go for it. Hopefullly you get a good lunch out of the deal, too.
BTW, have you ever read The Grapes of Wrath?

Free market economy. Any good or service is only worth as much as an able buyer is willing to pay and an able seller is willing to take. The perfect example is real estate. You can argue until you're blue about whether a shack on the beach is worth $1 Million or not, but it does nothing to diminish or inflate the value as long as someone is willing to buy it and the seller is willing to sell it for that price.

My point is that if an individual is willing to show up and take pics with their bike for a T-bag (hehe), then that is what his time and modeling skill is worth. The end. A pro wouldn't take a T-bag as compensation because his time/ skill is worth more.

Ciao Fun, I mostly agree with what you say, except for the fact that using one's likeness for commercial gain has nothing to do with being a professional or unprofessional model. Models usually get paid a day rate + usage. A model's day rate should definitely reflect their level of experience and professionalism, but is usually only a small part of his/her earnings. Usage is payment for a model's likeness and reflects the scale that the photographs will be used. In this case national print ads and website use. With the exception of a few specific cases (for instance, the model is a celebrity or has an especially distinctive look) usage should be pretty much the same for professionals and non professionals alike. It's usage where models generally make their money NOT their day rate. If a company is making money off of your face (and they are when they use your picture in commercials) you need to be paid fairly for it, IMHO.
For me and many other commercial photographers working in the business these days, this issue has very little to do with economics and what the market can handle. It's more about preserving the integrity of our livelihood and ensuring we continue to make a living in a very difficult business.

Scott, you're absolutely right. If someone was asking for usage for anything BUT commercial gain, this wouldn't be an issue to me.

so i guess we're never going to find out what the "proper rate" should be. ::)

Sorry, Derby. I got off on my tangent and forgot to answer your question.
I can't tell you exactly what the "proper rate" is without more information from the client as to where the pictures will be used, circulation, size of image, prominence of subject in picture, and for how long it will be used. But, I can make an educated guess:
Day rate for person: $250- $500
Usage: $1000- $5000+ (too many unknown variables to know for sure)
Bike: $100 (probably more because it's somewhat rare and specific)

Minimum total, probably around $1350. + lunch  [thumbsup]
