About to get my hands on a free 99 monster 750. previous owner said it sputtered and lacked power so he cleaned the lines and carbs with no improvement. Any thoughts? Also noticed a weird circular cap inserted into the exhaust that looked like it may restrict flow, any thoughts on that? Any other tips or suggestions for this new project would be greatly appreciated as this is my first ducati and street bike. Thanks in advance.

First thing to do is a compression test. Like to see numbers above 100psi and both cylinders within a couple of psi of each other. After that, take the removed spark plugs and clip them to the wire and touch the electrode to the cylinder head bolt, then hit the start button and verify spark at both plugs.

This could be as simple as running on one cylinder due to something like an unplugged wire in the firing loop, a bad pick up sensor, or as bad as needing new rings or heads rebuilt. If someone tried to replace the belts and skipped a tooth, put it on too loose, or worse yet if the belt broke while riding, the results are quite awful.

Start filling your replies with lots of pictures as folks diagnose your issues and help.

Haha Free M-750...I paid for mine & it has been wrecked twice LoL Now STILL paying in parts....you did well!!!

Have been using the Haynes manual for this model for repairs/research along with the good board members here...Do you have access to the Haynes manual or service manual for this bike? There are some links around for the M-900 manual and many procedures have seemed similar between the 2 models.

Photos definitely help as caferacer Mike has stated...Best of Luck!!!

Thanks all for the input! I don't have access to a manual right now but I'm sure that will help. I'm thinking of tackling the belts and valves first since previous owner said he tried carbs and lines. Other than that I think fresh paint should keep me happy. Can't wait for this to be an easy winter project in the man cave.

A free kitten will cost you an average of $4K during its lifetime. ;)
