Newbie to the bike, bought in July 012, rode for the season. Parked for the winter. Hooked bike up to battery tender all winter 24/7. Go to take bike out for first ride and bike won't start. Electronics on display come up, hit start button, electronics shut down for a few then comes back on. Grab manual figure out how to get/read error info. From what I gathered it looks like battery.
Question is, is that a correct assumption? And (b) did I store bike for winter incorrectly?
I have no mechanical bike experience so if you could please try to explain in lay men terms I'd appreciate. And please no criticism for not bringing to a dealer. I'm trying to learn and being a girl I don't want to be taken advantage of at a dealership. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Dealer

Bought in July 012, And please no criticism for not bringing to a dealer. I'm trying to learn and being a girl I don't want to be taken advantage of at a dealership. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Taken from your message above. Take the battery at least back to the dealership, and have them check it if you doubt yourself. I purchased a 2012 696 in May of last year and have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty w/ my purchase. If you have the same... take the bike back to the dealership, and let them know you have already pulled up the diagnostics and the battery has failed according to the dash read-out. (Believe me the dealership will treat you different if they know you are able and willing to read the manual!!!) The dealership that I purchased from already had the battery charger pig-tail installed on the bike. I had to only buy the changer(C-Tek) from them at the end of the season.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Very strange problem going on. I am curious about your battery tender. Did you buy it from the dealer, or after ? Who installed it ? It doesn't really sound like a dead battery if the electronics are shutting off once you hit the ignition button. Is your headlight dim ? That is one quick way to tell you have a low/dead battery.

Did you add any fuel stabilizer to the gas ? How long was the bike stored for ?
The dealership that I purchased from already had the battery charger pig-tail installed on the bike. I had to only buy the changer(C-Tek) from them at the end of the season.
My dealer also pre wired the C-Tek lead onto my battery, but I had to buy the actual C-Tek charger later. I ended up buying the charger from Amazon, because the dealer wanted nearly double the price.

wait a sec . . . did you buy your bike from MCC too ?! lol

It's likely that the batery was not charged properly by the particular charger you have. not all chargers are appropriate for all tyoes of batteries.
You can take it to the dealer or many auto parts stores that sell batteries and they can test the voltage. If you have a friend with a voltmeter or multimeter, you can test it yourselves. Normal voltage should be somewhere between 12.5 to 13.5 volts.

Thanks for the responses. The bike came with the lead attached to the battery. The bike was stored from end of October until yesterday. Yes stabilizer was added. The charger I attached to the bike is not a C-Tek. (Didn't realize it made a difference - thought they were all the same -ugh)
Cant check headlight now since I managed to follow instructions in manual and get tank off and battery out LOL Love the bike but boy who ever decided a battery under the tank would be a good idea... needs their head examined :)
Dealer is closed on Mondays so cant call and talk to them until tomorrow. Again, thanks for the ideas/suggestions and help.

It doesn't have to be C-Tek, that is just what our dealership installed. So did they give you the charger and wire the lead ? Or did you buy the charger separately afterwards ?

Mcc :)

Yes Scotty I purchased my Monster from MCC... have been a customer there when I rode in the dirt (Oh to be young again) wish I woulda' thought of Amazon... paid $50 and change for the charger.

to check the battery at home: charge the battery fully, remove the charger, check the voltage on the battery and write it down. let the battery sit over night, check voltage again. if it's gone really low then it's that the battery can no longer hold a charge.

Remember, some of those leads to the battery have a fuse in them. If that fuse blows, the charger no longer charges the battery and it will eventually die.

Also a low quality charger can damage or run a battery dry.

If you store your new generation monster for anything longer than a week, it should be on the charger. What you really want a nice, microprocessor controlled charger/maintainer.

Does the battery still have fluid in it?

ok, so put battery on charger, says its fully charged. Checked battery on meter and it came back as 12.6
put battery back into bike, tried again, same results.
Headlight is as strong as can be when I turn key on, all electronics on "dash" come on, wait for the Monster 696 to flash by on display, push start button and all you hear is click then all lights on dash go away, and nothing happens. A few seconds later, electronics come back.
Read the error again, same thing.... Error comes up, says its a battery error and it displays the word HI (flashing) battery.
I'm stumped!?!?!

How far do you live from your dealer? Is your bike still under warranty? Have them come get it ,or call a buddy with a truck and take it there. You are trying to diagnose a electrical problem on a sophisicated Italian motorcycle, and thats a tall task for some one with limited knowledge. No offense, but you tried the obvious solutions and its a no go. Get it to the people who service the bike.

The battery sounds like it drains instantly. I would have let the battery sit unplugged after charging and seen how long it held the charge. If the 12.6 doesn't last a day unplugged then it's not gonna be able to hold the charge long enough to start the bike.

I just had a same issue, What I find out if your
1-battery is low and you accelerate at higher RPMs the battery is charging and too much load at stator.
2- This caused stator to short in between the wires and increase the charging voltage more than 15v.
3- When the voltage is increased the regulator shorts to prevent electronics (zener diode opens)
4- It shorts the battery and stator both and your battery goes low and more load at stator
5- Stator becomes hot and it shuts down
6- battery drains to 10v (no crank)
Solution
if you want to drive this bike to safe place without recovery.
Disconnect-stator from regulator rectifier
recharge battery if you have external charger.
Crank it will start normal so you can drive around 20-30km till battery drains to less than 11v.
I hope it will help someone in future. :)
