I found out today what happened to my week old S4R---The main shaft nut came off ! WTF ?? The duc mechanic said, "Luigi must have had one too many chiantis when he put the bike together ". Hopefuly he was more careful on other parts. By the way, that comment was not intended to be any kind of ethnic slur--I love Italians and things Italian (except Fiats).

the nut that secures the clutch hub? if that wasn't installed properly, i'd insist the the mechanic pull off the alternator side cover and check that the flywheel retaining nut's torqued to spec. if the guy who built it goofed on one side, i wouldn't be shocked if he goofed on the other too.

Good advice, thanks--I'll see that he does it.

This is a strongly recommended BCM first service item:

pull the left side case, locktite and torque the alt nut.
Bruce has seen too many busted motors caused by nuts spinning off.

I'm speaking 2V here. Can't say if Bruce has the same recommendation on 4V'ers.

Interestingly I just had my clutch fixed - it turned out to be an only finger-tight clutch basket nut. The torque spec was something crazy, like 170 NM. They said they needed 3 guys just to torque it to spec.

I called them and asked them to check the left side retaining nut--the service manager said "that takes a long time and if it was loose, it would have come off allready"--Well I think thats a bunch of BS.. they could have said the same thing about the main shaft nut three days ago, yet it came off. --anyways, they did say they would check it for me. To be fair, the service manager is a great guy and he is the one who drove 50 miles to retrieve my bike. I cant wait to get my bike back despite the fact that we have snow and sub-freezing temps. It was 80 yesterday afternoon-- [smiley=undecided.gif]

Humungus,

OT, but nice pic under your name. I thought at first it was M51 maybe a little distorted by the thumbnail sizing, but I see it's actually M101. 8)

Actually there was a factory service bulletin to all Ducati dealers that told them to check the alternator/flywheel nut. I don't know if this was restricted to any particular year or model but many of the better service places check it as standard procedure.

Thanks Mark--I took that picture-- one of my hobbies is astrophotography, I know its geeky, but kind of cool--I actually got a picture published in the Dec issue of Sky and Telescope--NGC7023.

Cool deal, humungus!

I've been an idle astronomy geek for the last year or so, but have at least checked out Mars' close approach and some other stuff recently.

Since I'm gearing up for a track day soon at Jennings, it dawned on me that Jennings is not too far from the darkest part of FL. If its nice and dark there late at night (camping at the track), it could turn out to be worth packing a scope as well as the track gear. ;D

Herb, What do you expect from someone who own's a honda. probably didn't know how to work on it. Better to have it go to someone who will love it for what it is. ;)
And just what is that wiseas$ ?
