are over. That bitch of a S4 gets to go back to the shop on Thursday... apparently the fan relay isn't the problem and the bike still overheats.

Just 15 miles of stop and go traffic did it in today. So I guess I get to repeat this episode for the fourth time... but this time I got a digital photo of the mutherfocking temp light on so when they look at me funny I can point it out to 'em. Needless to say, I won't be giving them four months to pull their thumbs out of their rear end again. This junk is real old though.

Man that sure stinks!

Sometimes engines run hot because combustion is still taking place in the exhaust port, heating the exhaust valve leading to high head temps. Late ignition timing will do it. But most mechanics will try to blame the cooling system instead of the source of the excessive heating. I hope they figure it out this time!

Mark,

I've followed your saga since the beginning and I feel for you dude. I'm sure you already know but everyone else (at least me) appreciates that you keep shoving your S4 lemon POS down the dealers throat every 3 miles when it breaks again. It's only because of this type of persistence that the minute number of recalls from Ducati ever occur. It is the only way they will change their customer service as well. I wouldn't recommend an S4 to anyone I liked. ride/walk on

Mark,
Sorry to hear that your S4 is still fighting you. That's just not right.

According to the '01 S4 Service Manual and '02 S4 Owner's Manual that I have, there are some significant differences between the '01 and '02 ECU's.

'01 has a fan relay, '02 does not. '02 gauges have the digital temp, '01 gauges do not.

I'd hesitate cross-swapping the two.

For some reason, the ECU is not deciding to turn the fans on.
Wish I could offer more help.

Mark, this bike of yours is seriously taking on the plot of an as yet unwritten Stephen King novel

you may want to investigate factory deaths at Ducati that might be coincidental with your bike's build date or something

At the point you're at, I'd be damn nervous if the thing ever got sorted out in any sustained manner....it might just be getting ready to launch the big catastrophic structure defect on you

sorry, Mark. :'( my heart goes out to you. this overheating problem shouln't be too hard to troubleshoot. your dealer or, perhaps another dealer needs to spend the time to find out where the electricity stops when the bike overheats.

"Trent, my S4 works fine. So does Tom's, Speeddog's, and 3 or 4 other's that i see regularly. Mark just seems to have a lemon."

CVC23103A (whatever that means) :

No kidding. That is the point. He has a lemon and DNA has refused to take care of the problem. That is why I wouldn't recommend an S4. Most of the people that have posted to this thread seem like they aren't familiar with Mark's story/situation. This has been going on since before this message board existed and some of us have followed it since then.

"CVC is California Vehicle Code , when your really bored do a google for the rest."

I apologize for my ignorance of the California Vehicle Code acroynm for reckless driving as I've never driven in California. If I knew your name I might have recognized you from the non-message board days.

"I am familiar with Mark's S4 and have been on the DML for 3 years or so now. "

I guess I shouldn't have assumed that you've not been around after seeing your June 2003 registration date on this site.

"Flawed in my view since any model could have a lemon. "

Flawed in my view because I subscribe to reality, which is I haven't yet seen a M900 lemon, only an S4.

I think we just have different ways of looking at it.

By the way, who are you?
