I just did a save of all the ride photos that have been posted so far..just so I can have them. Because when I'm bored at work I enjoy looking at pics.

I know there was talk of getting a website for the group and such. I asked someone who would know and they said one could be had for about $10 a month on Geocities, who is now owned by YAHOO so that would probably be good. I'll fork out the cash for the URL, but I'm not up for paying for the entire thing for the year. It should be easy to get the cash form everyone in the group, BUT some people may not care to have such a site so I wouldn't expect them to pay, no big deal. I could host something on MY site, but then we get a url like www.fleedatz.com/SoCalMonsters/ and that kind of looks hack. :-D I figure the site would just be postings of RIDES, ride routes and member photos (who's who and what'not) and a link to the cafepress store to get shirts and stickers yada yada. I could build the site no problem.

I also ran across some nice pics of intividuals and their respective bikes. I thought it might be good to have a "sticky" thread on the top of this page that would be for members and their bikes. I could host those pictures on my website without a problem. Just get me your photo, and I'll upload it, and put it on the thread (Thread name SoCal Monster Hooligans ...?...SoCal Monster Peeps?...)

I know there is a DML MEMBERS in the photo gallery on this site, but it's a bit messy in there. WIth more people getting bikes, and more people joining up for rides, I think it would be helpfull to have a pic of people and the bike they ride so we might even know a name before the introductions at the ride.

Just some thoughts. Let me know if I can do anything or whatever.

Eric, I think this is a great idea. Sounds like it might cost less than fifty-cents-a-month-per-person for website. I can handle that. Is there a way/would it be a good idea to add a buck or to to the logo tee's and whatever's to help fund this (and maybe kick the DM board a portion also)?

How big a pic can/should we send?

yeah it should be easy to get the cash. But I can understand that not everyone will want to chip in , and that's TOTALLY cool. So I'm not sure what to do really on the funding side. I'd pay for the whole thing, but I have to pay for my site that helps me get jobs hahaah. Adding some $$ to the shirt isn't a bad idea.

The pic..anything over 640 x 480 and I can resize it.

Oh eyah..monster hooligan said that he knows a HOST that will cost about $5 a month..that's pretty daymn cheap. Also the SoCalMonsters site should be REALLY low on bandwidth and such..so the most base-bommer site size will work for us.

Having total control of what and how you can display content is something we don't have here. BUT at the same time this place does have its values. If we are to have two sites, the task is to have the two coexist without making it a hassle for us to jump back and forth between the two.

Several of the other clubs have their own websites, perhaps some of the folks there may be willing to shed some light on how to best coexist with the DML here. I'll try to talk with them to see how it works from the logistic / conceptual end. I don't know how to do website construction, so the nuts and bolts aspect would be up to someone else.

The DML is an incalculable resource, it's gotten us to where we are right now. We need to think through all of what we would be getting from our own website, as well as how to dovetail with the DML here.

The thread "What do YOU want the SCMHA to be?" has touched a little on this, as well as club logos, dealer discounts, etc. Actually, it has "morphed" more than I expected it would.....but it's a good thing.

Perhaps a group ride, with the focus being a group meeting to discuss a general club plan / direction would be a good thing.
Might prevent some U-Turns down the road a ways.......

"prevent some U-Turns" sounded funny coming from me, didn't it?

I think maintaining this site as the main "hang out" is best because a) we're already here; b) people doing a search find this one pretty easily; and c) it's less work. I maintained a site back in the day for a car group and it got old after a while. When I handed it over to somebody else, it died. Not that I was all that special, but it's tough to make a switch.

The points about having two sites is a good one. I can barely get here a couple times a week. I think the question is "why do we want another site?" If there isn't a compelling reason we shouldn't do it. While it'd be cool to have a SCMHA URL, I don't think that is, in itself, compelling. Another issue is control of content. I would be willing to bet that the DML dudes could help us out with that. If they can't, I have a website, as I'm sure many of you do, that we could use to display images or other content that cannot be handled here. None of this keeps us from doing t-shirts, adding more structure to the SoCal group, etc.

I believe that the more unity we have as Monster owners the more benefits we'll get. I also believe that that unity comes from having a central place to virtually meet. From that perspective, I'd like to keep the SoCal group as one (vs. LA, OC, San Diego). I'd hate to segment down to "Southwest San Marcos/Northeast Carlsbad near Business Park Drive Monster Hooligan Association" levels.

I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but rather suggesting that we give some long, hard thought to it before barreling down that path.

I was just thinking that having a site with the following would be cool, probably no more and no less.

1) "member" list/images so that we know who's who, and what's what.
2) ride logs/maps photos.
and PERHAPS
3) a link to get shirt and the like from cafepress or whatever.

BUT most of that could be had without a seperate site. We just need a sticky thread at the TOP of this forum, the one with the map is fine. I'm just anal, and I'd like it to be clean, with the map as the first "post" then every post thereafter being the photo of the person and bike they ride, and no real back and fourth banter. I'll host those photos no problem, just get me a pic of you and your bike, or your bike and you seperate and I'll work something up.

I don't know how to make a post sticky.

I agree.

We should keep SoCal Monsters big. We'll have more barging power.

Since Southern California is so big it will be difficult getting peeps north of LA and the SD folks together very often. But, we should do what we can and keep the group together.

Just a thought.

AC

[email protected]<kin' hard to argue with those three words.

We got to where we are by working to bring people in, not by chasing them off. More is better.

I think we can work with the DML on getting some folders within the SCMHA forum, as long as the YABB software can do it, I don't think it'll be a problem.

Cool with me boyz. I'll still archive all the photos of the rides and the ride map for whatever reason. And if anyone needs them just know I have them.

I can temporarily donate a Cobalt Qube and an IP address on a fiber optic link if you guys want to try out a SCMHA website. We can't register the IP but if we just link from here (DML) nobody would know the difference. I could have it set up tomorrow. I just need to know who the content creator or creators would be so I can setup the accounts and passwords. Just say the word and it's done.
