Watch those rocker arms!

Decided it was time to delve into the black art of desmo valve adjustment. The learning curve was steep, but the reward is sweet with money in your pocket and a sweet purring engine. Special thanks to Ducman for the use of his shim kit. One downer though; I found two (really three, but I'm ignoring the third for now) rocker arms with all the chrome plating worn off. I'm almost positive the affected camshaft is still fine, but I'll let a dealer look at it anyway. Good news is that Ducati have lowered the price of the arms from $220 to $45. Takes the sting out of having to pony up for replacement parts at 24,000 miles. Kinda.

So, fellow hooligans, don't assume we're immune from the dreaded rocker arm chrome flaking off thing just because we're not turning 12,000 revs on a Superbike. Insist those buggers are checked at every valve adjustment.

Yeah, you gotta be careful. Just had mu 748 in the shop though and my rockers were fine (thank god!). Scott Waters has a guy that does all his replating for the rocker arms and he's supposed to be great and relatively cheap too! MIght wanna give him a call to find out.
....if you can get him on the phone.
I've dodged that bullet so far, but I'm not many miles ahead of you.

I believe my recent 996S rocker was $45.00 part cost, with exchange, at Scotty's...... ;)

I have it on good authority that's how Ducati set the price. :p
Who is this Scotty you speak of? I would like to get my 'bad' rockers turned into 'good' rockers. I can't justify Megacycle 'cause they charge more than a stock rocker costs. But for $45, I'm in there. Any contact info on Scotty?

The rockers on my S4 were flaking at 12k miles. The Monsters are definitely not immune against that problem.

Where you been, Chadster? :D You were so silent down there in SD I thought you were in Iraq or something.
wow. i'm livin' this pain right now.

my S4 is in the shop right now w/ 14K miles. needs all 8 rockers @ $45 per. i was quoted $69 per at the local bike shop, so i considered myself lucky.

my independent mechanic (www.ridersinc.com) just called to tell me that they're willing to discount their hourly from $80/hr to $60/hr (euro bikes. domestic or japanese bikes are $50/hr). that makes a big difference in the owie factor.

the owner is a racer named nick, and he said he'd extend it to anybody that requests it from DML members as well, which i thought was cool. he's trying to get the word out.

he's got a stud mechanic w/ 15 years' experience that works on all types of bikes, and i've known nick for a few years now and trust him to do the right thing.

great prices on parts/accessories as well. give him a call, tell him simonster sent you.

no, i'm not affiliated w/ ridersinc, but i definitely support quality vendors w/ good prices.
