It's an internal gusset to prevent twisting.

It is probably more a cost based decision, but that's just a guess. Gusseting is a lighter way of stiffening as well as cheaper. Don't know what they were shooting for. I'm not an engineer. I guess we'll know when the WSBK version is built.

The doublewall/gusset is a lighter method of getting the required stiffness.

Also, the area next to the tire is quite tall, so without the gusset, that whole outer skin will deflect in and out when the swingarm bends from side to side.
That's why it's got that hideous weld, to connect the outer skin to the gusset so it *can't* deflect in and out.
