I almost experienced my first Motorbike fatality last Saturday Night!

A good freind of mine left the pub to head up & see us at another location & it was only after an hour or two that we got a call to say he had had an accident.

I rushed to the scene ony to find the bike & lots of police, so headed off to the only hospitial there is in town to see how he was.

when i walked into emergency i saw him laying semi-concious on the bed, he had deep gouges in his shoulder, smashed forarm to the point of only just hanging by a thread, broken leg, Gaping hole in his stomache, cuts & bruises all over.

as there is no specialist medicial services in PNG we made the decision to air lift him to Australia. This took a couple of hours but had him on a jet to Cairns hospitial late the same evening.

He is stable in Cairns, but if they can't get the infection under controll he will loose his arm. (God i hope not)

This is still vivid in my mind & i must say has been a wake up call for me.

Just thought i'd share this with everyone as a harsh reminder. Pease be carefull!

there is talk that he may have been a bit worse for wear after a session if you know what i mean. He went wide on a corner (two lanes each way with a concrete center strip in the middle) dropped the bike which stuck to the curb & slid along, but he got thrown onto the cetre strip. There is lamp posts on the center strip of which we are certain he hit one, probably the cause of the broken leg. But the next pole had been knocked over previously by a car & all that was left was a square metal plate sitting 4" high with 4 bolts sitting up, this is what did the damage to his arm.

wow. hate to hear those stories. I have to say the part of your story that stands out in my mind is where you said "he left the pub". :-X

I hope we all remember to really pay attention if we decide to hit a bar when riding. lets all remember to keep it to one beer when we go out on two wheels. Water after that!

I don't even do "one beer." For me, alcohol does not enter into the equation....ever. Riding is riding, driking is drinking. One must repsect each for what it is, IMHO.

I never drink when I'm gonna be riding. I'm a much better rider, than I am a drinker. Unfortunately, a couple beers means I'm done for the night. Don't drink and ride/drive, kiddies. You might hit a bump and spill your drink.

unfortunately here (& I'm sure other places in the world) there is no public transport at night, so one has to get one's self home, the same way one get's to where they are going before dark. :-X

With only one car & one bike this can be difficult, but like i said this "Wake up Call" reminds one that alternative arrangements should be made.

Has done for me [smiley=worried.gif]

Thanks Everyone for the good wishes.

at one stage, if they couldn't get infection under controll, they were going to Amputate his arm. Thank god we just received news that looks like things are under controll & they may soon be able to attempt skin grafts.

Sobering...............to say the least!

A Very, Very lucky boy!

good luck to your friend. If there is anything worse than seeing a bike accident - it must be seeing one with someone you know involved.

hopefully everything turns out ok
