here's a link to some intimate pics of pongo's butt. this is what i did to adapt a ventura pack to a hacked tail. something like this should work for anyone with a sensibly hacked tail.

the aluminum "blocks" that are between the wierdo frame bracket and the ventura pack are 1/2" x 1" aluminum bar that's about 2" long. the holes are tapped M8x1.25.

the chunks holding the turn signals are like 1/4" x 1" and were milled so as to not be too thick for the nut and lockwasher to fit. also, being thinner allowed them to more easily be bent to make the turns signes look even.

yes, a pack frame inserts into the tubes and firmly holds a large pack or two...

on the 916, i would remove the "L" brackets but on the monsters, we're content to leave them in place.

Great pics Chris. Thanks a ton- I'm assuming this bike has low pipes on it? Ventura makes several different racks for this series. What series would you suggest I try and fabricate for my 94 900 with high remus?

hmmmm, hard to say. if you can fabricate adaptor brackets like i did in the pongo butt link, then i'd try the 2000 m900ie setup. that offers the most flexibility. seeing how it mounts to the passenger rail, there'd prolly be room for high pipes if they strap to the actual frame, inboard of the passenger rail. the way that the ventura pack attaches at the front ends offers lots of adjustability. it's a hinge like setup, like a short pipe or spacer that's vertically welded to the rail and then a simple metal strap goeas around the frame part. a bolt runs through each end of the strap and through the spacer at the end of the L bracket frame. for the rear mounting point on Pongo's L brackets, i had to bend the tabs a little to get them to line up with my little bricks of aluminum.

i looked into it and for the injected ducatis (who's ventura frames seem to work well with carb'd models that have hacked tails) there are two versions of ventura pack: low mount mufflers and high mount mufflers.
