i did a search and didn't come up w/ this, so my apologies if this is a repost, but i saw this on ebay:

a silca black key blank that can be programmed in standard locksmith coding machines off of your EXISTING black key!?! that's AWESOME! furthermore, if your local locksmith can't do it, you can send it in to this fella! [clap]

Maybe I'm paranoid, but sending this guy your key so he can make a coded key would give him a key to your bike and your address right? Don't know that I'd be comfortable with that...

i hear ya. i'd find a local locksmith that has the cloner. it can't be only the criminals that have these things. ;)

has anybody heard of these? i've heard that the black factory keys come pre-coded so that locksmith coders can't program them. if this works (it sounds feasible), this is HUGE for me, since the guy that sold me my bike is "still looking" for the red and extra black keys.

Re: uncoded black key blanks that can be coded off of your existing black keys!!

the silca key works kw17t5 or kw17t5si
you can take the black key you have to a locksmith with a silca rw2 or rw3 copy the original key
to the new silca blank
then have it cut
first try might be wierd, pull out key and try again
it worked for me, i have pdf and research before i sprang for the ebay blank

i dont know what kind of transponder is in the red key... regardless that if it can be written to, it wont be the master key if if wasnt the first key used.
but if you have the cloned copies that the original has already been 'added' to the immo, i dont understand why you would want to or need to use the red to add more.

thanks for the links, lithium! when i called santa monica lock & key to ask if they had a cloner, the guy on the phone started getting all weird and giving me attitude. i think he suspected i was trying to steal a bike despite my being very clear about everything. the reality, however, is that he's just not up-to-date on his trade, which is tremendously annoying, especially since he was very vocal in confirming his stupidity.

Simonster-
Check out my post under "Purchasing and Owning" for "Immobilizer & no red key: options." I don't know where you are in your quest, but something in there might help.

Re: uncoded black key blanks that can be coded off of your existing black keys!!

There is a locksmith in San Diego with a cloner. If you mail me a key, I'll take that as a chance to ride my S2R over there and BS with the guy again. I think he charges $50~60 to clone and cut. :p ( i bought one of the eBay ones for my single black key'd 620 )

fwiw, our skunkworks team are diligently working on this subject. "I've got my best 4 guys on it!" ;D (remember that commercial??)

Do you know whether or not the cloning machine can program an OEM Ducati transponder key? (Yes, I don't have the red key) I'd rather have a copy of the OEM black key with the Ducati on it rather than a blank black key. The OEM key is only $5 more than the Silca/Ilco blank. Yes I want to show off that I ride a Ducati.

AFAIK, no. The OEM Ducati black keys are already coded. It is my understanding that once coded, the RFID can't be changed. This is what makes the blank silca keys special.

If you need the red key to program new black keys, why would a new blank OEM key ordered from the dealer (that didn't come with the bike) be already coded?

Because if you have the red key, you can access the Immobilzer memory to add new codes to the system.
