Hi,

I just got my bike yesterday and have only ridden about 35 miles. Today I noticed a strange sound, which sounds like a mild backfire through the intake area under the front part of the tank, when decelerating to a stop. The sound seems like it might be coming from the breather/air filter area. It kind of sounds like a quick

When I first got my Monster, My wife bought it new and had pipes put on it (she's a great wife). I noticed that it backfired on deceleration, a friend of mine who had a Ducati 996 said that it was normal, so I let it be, and now I'm used to it. I've ridden H0nda's all my life, and the backfiring was kind of a new experience, but again, I've been told it's normal. Hope that helps.

My bike's new this year. Race pipes, open air cleaner, remapped ECM. Never backfires. Ever. Sounds like somethings not quite right. Any mods? What did your dealer tell you?

Hi,

No mods at all, although, I do have some FBF pipes on order. It's completely stock. I just rode it home and it popped/spit/backfired (whatever it's doing) several times.

I'm going to take it to the shop and see what they have to say.

Regards,
Anthony

I've got 1500 miles on my 03 M1000 with stock exaust, I've heard no such popping or backfiring. While decelerating / engine braking on my last bike (Triumph speed triple) I'd would get a little bit of the popping sound though the exhaust. A little lean maybe, but I liked the way it sounded.

Does not sound normal, my new M800 has never backfired or popped in the intake or exhaust in 8000k. I would take it back to the dealer. Airleak in throttle bodies? Good luck.

I called my Duc service department today and they said the popping noise is normal during break-in (run-in). They suggested I continue to ride it and have them check it out at the 600-mile checkup.

I'll update my findings.

Thanks!

I have a new 800 dark, put 3200 miles on it in two months, no backfires ever, even with the new pipes... definately keep an eye on it, and possibly look at your plugs for whiteness.

Interesting. My new M800 does something similar, but only very occasionally - like maybe three times in 500 miles so far. Did it this morning on the way to work, in fact. Sounds like a mild backfire through the intake (or would that make it a frontfire??). At the time I was trundling along at a constant speed, about 3000rpm in second.

On a possibly related note, what are you other M800 guys seeing for gas mileage? I'm lucky to get 85 miles before the fuel light is solidly on with the bike at rest. The tank takes about 2.5 gallons at that point, so I'm getting in the region of 34mpg. Sounds kind of low...

34MPG does seem kinda low. I average about 43 with stock gearing, 40 with deeper gears, and I beat the piss out of my m1000!

Sadly that's about when my light goes on. I have heard you can run till about 110-120 though. So pretty much every 80 I have to stop to get gas. I put in about 1.8 gallons which gets me another 80 miles.

I noticed you got aftermarket pipes. Most people tend to wait till after the break in before they get pipes. At least from what I have gather on this webboard. I am still running the stock pipes, maybe that is why I did not experience the sounds you described.

I just went through my second tank a fuel. 2.73 gal and rode 110 miles before the fuel light came on. 40 mph makes me feel much better.

I guess the dealer didn
