I just installed some cycle cat clipons and have the stock triple clamp. Can the top piece be machined down to get rid of the old handle bar mount? will it have any integrity issues? of course just temporarily until i can afford a cycle cat triple...... [thumbsup]

has anyone else done this? any info much appreciated.......thanks

Yes others have ground the bar mounts off. They are hollow so you end up with unsightly holes (IMO)

I have no FHE or real engineering specs to back up this opinion but I don't especially like the idea of opening up/weakening that area either.

Again IMO it is more aesthetically pleasing to just fab up a nice looking plate that will bolt on. Some have mounted GPS, i-Pods, whatever... nichols sells a very nice looking but spendy cover plate. http://www.nicholsmfg.com/monsterClamp.html

is it possible to grind/mill down the clamps and use JB Weld to possibly fill the holes and then paint it? that JB weld stuff hardens like metal and can be filed down. just a thought. -MM

Or just use aluminum filler weld and sand it down flush. I'm actually planning to experiment w/ this in the near future w/ a spare top triple. I'll post up my results when I get around to the project.

If you're going to go that far... Remove the top triple, and have someone fill the holes by welding aluminum in there and then finish as above. Think about how catastrophic a top triple failure would be...
