Hello,
I am new to the board, and was wondering what are the best and cheapest options for a low (under the forks) steering damper...
Is the stock steering damper that comes with the S's any decent, is anybody selling one?
thank you.

yeah...
it seems that some Monster S's were fitted with dampers stock, similar to the one the Stuart sells at Spareshack (non rebuildable steel ones)...
all the kneedragers options are quite expensive though...

interesting... i'd guess that those dampers were dealer add-ons? honestly never heard of them coming standard from the factory on any bike except for the superbikes.
...
on another note, have you dialed in your suspension yet? if not, take the time to get your suspension setup to suit your weight and riding style. you may not need a damper at all. i've ridden monsters with dampers and find them to be an interesting feature, but i never really felt the need for one on my bike.

I must concur with Mr. Strati. I have found no need for a damper since I got my Monster suspension dialed in.

It used to be scarey in high speed sweepers and twisties, now I can smoke my buddies on BMW, Hyabusas and other UJB's all day in the mountains. If I could only get more horsepower to deal with them on the straights...79hp from a 900ie just can't hang with a Busa when he gets wound up. But then again, I am not sure that any other bike can either.

Back to the subject. Get a good rear shock and a gold valve kit and set up your suspension and you will not think of a damper again. Unless you are into googaws!

I am a big guy, so adjustmnets to the stock set up were not an option.

1. Replaced rear shock with a Penske designed for my weight.

2. Replaced front fork spring with a Race Tech Gold valve kit and the heaviest spring they made.

Did nothing to the Penske. Came set up damn near perfect and that alone changed the bike to a canyon carving demon.

After a couple of track days I increased the pre load to stop dragging the brake lever on the right and the side stand knob on the left.

Of course the stock pipes are gone. So are the stock rear sets now. I have been told the next thing I am gonna drag is the header pipe.

I need to sell the Cromo, but every time I ride it I have an absolute blast on it and I cannot bring myself to actually part with it.
