I think my starter motor finally fried on me. Tried to crank her up yesterday and like she usually does she didn't want to. Usually takes several attempts to get her fired up. As she was trying to start the starter seemed to get weaker then stopped and followed with some hissing. Tried again but nothing but the starter relay click. Found a few threads on this on here and tried a few different things. I have a few bike batteries. I took one of my fully charged yusa's and hooked it up, same thing. Took off the cable to the starter motor and it was pretty nasty, so I cleaned it up good. Then connected the battery directly to the starter motor using jumper cables and I got sparks, nice big 4th of July fireworks, but that's all, it did not try to start.

It's still raining so I tried to just bump start my bike in the garage, I know, but I could tell it tried to turn over, so I'm confident the engine isn't seized. I was also able to move the bike around while in a high gear. Just checking to see if anyone else has any input on this, it's gonna be a PIA to take off the left engine case to swap out the starter motor, plus costly, I don't think they're cheap.

I had to do the same thing on a bike with only 8,000 miles. I'd like to give you good news, but in fact, it's a suck-arse experience.

Same problem with my starter. I took the cap (right side) off and the brushes were totally destroyed. I was able to have it rebuilt at an auto electric shop cheap ($35). However, reassembling the starter when you didn't remove the motor (i.e., pulling the left-side engine cover) is a substantial test of patience and will. Trust me on this.

If you need more insight, just ask.
