I just got a new bike, and would like to change the gearing at my 600 service, as recommended countless times on this list (up 2 at the back, I guess). Does this have an effect on the speedometer/odometer? How does the bike figue out how fast it is going/far it has gone? Would changing the rear tire size affect it?

There is a small sensor mounted on the rear brake caliper bracket, it generates a signal from the brake rotor bolts passing by it. That signal goes to the gauge assembly, which calculates the speed and miles traveled.

Gearing changes do not effect your speed or mileage readings.

A different tire size will have some effect, depends on the rolling radius.
