I've never ridden a 900, but I had a 2004 620. I was planning on keeping the 620 after getting a 696, but after riding the 696, I didn't think that I'd even want to ride the 620 any longer. I enjoyed riding the 620, but the 696 just felt so much lighter. I couldn't tell much difference in power, but for you, you may not like the decrease in power. I'd suggest you go for a test ride and see if you like the 696 over your 900. I sold the 620. Only have a 696 now.

The 696 is fast, nimble and responsive but lacks the fantastic feel of the older monsters. I found the tank to heat up and be uncomfortable and the look of the older frames and swing arms are far better then the massively plastic and molded look of the 696. And I do not trust the plastics to last the test of time. I would keep the 900 and just give it the love a beautiful machine like that deserves. Failing that, send it my way to keep mine company, could be the big sister to my 750 :)
