If an issue involving warranty work arises, is it necessary to have the work done by a dealer? Is it possible to get the parts from the dealer and take care of the labor myself? Or would the dealer have to physically take the bike and examine it to confirm that a warranty issue is present? I feel like it would be easier for me to do the work myself instead of hauling a broken down bike around the state.

officially, for ducati to cover the part or repair, the dealer must do the work. i have heard of other arrangements, but any such arrangement would certainly jeopardize the dealer's franchise, so there's nothing public or formal.
