why not simply repaint you entire tank? it's fairly simple doing a DIY paint that'll last long enough until you can afford a professional respray.
sand down, then primer, then fine wet sand, then paint, then clear.
w/ a couple extra wet sands in the mix, it should come out OK. not show quality but better than a scratched up tank.
