So I picked up an '02 S4 with 1000mi. and a salvage title for $7k. It amazes me how little damage will total a bike for insurance reasons. What sucks about a salvage title though is I haven't found any insurace company that will insure for anything but liability. I don't care about collision but I really would like to have comprehensive coverage. Does anyone know of a company or agent that will cover more? It seems reasonable that an underwriter could appraise the bike and cover it for theft. Then again reasonable and insurance rarely find themselves in the same sentence.

Try Progressive. That's who hooked me up in Houston.

That's who I'm with now but they will only cover liability :(
Also, I spoke with the local Ducati dealer and they said that just a chip on the paint of the frame will 'total' the bike. They had the roof cave in after a big snow storm and sold many bikes afterwards with salvage titles.

I talked to my Insurance Agent briefly about salvage titles. According to him there are companies around that can change your salvage title to a clean title for a fee. He said that these companies are state specific due to their local laws, but a little internet investigation might be in order. Also, the reason why you can't get comp coverage on a salvage title is two things, one because to the insurance company the bike has no value due to the fact it has been paid out - kinda like being retired, and two they don't want to pay for any possible defects/accidents on a totalled bike (like say your riding down the highway and your frame decides like it's had enough and off you go).

This is why insurance rates for full coverage are outrageously high. Many insurance companies will unreasonably total a bike that in reality has damage far below the 75% that it takes to total the bike. Why is anybody's guess. But if they're willing to total a bike that does not have the amount of damage that they claim then it only stands to reason that they will not appraise and reinsure that same bike.

I also own a salvaged Monster. It was totaled because of the frame. Funny thing is, there is no damage to the frame at all. I had the bike inspected and now have a rebuilt title. And I only carry PL/PD on it.

I had a 996 insured in NY State by Progressive. Try calling them again; you might have gotten the "wrong" customer service person
