Have any of you done the handlebar conversion that is in the Ducati S4 catalog?? I want to install bar end turnsignals but can't put them on the stock bars.
I do not want to make the bike uncomfortable that is why I am asking if anyone has done the change is it more/less comfortable, does it keep the bars in about the same position as stock?
I have seen the clip-ons and they look way to low for me.

I was concerned about clipons being too low also. However, a couple years back, Strati happened upon a Heli-bar ST4 riser that with a little engineering allowed installation of clipons over the tripleclamp. The end result was about 1" drop in barend height. Worked out well for me as I still have that setup.

A couple of choices... CRG barend mirrors now have a style that will mount on your stock bars, no mods. Second, you can get a kit from Pro Italia that converts your S4 to regular tubular style bars.. cheapest too. You can also go to Cycle Cat risers and any rise clip on you desire... The Cycle Cats have the mounts for the guages as well like the PI set up. Heli doesn't have the guage mount but can be made to work. Last DP, it looks like you now have a choice of top clamps which uses standard tubular bars or the new variable taper bars like the S4R uses.. both have guage mounts... check pricing, the mirrors from CRG would be the cheapest if you are happy with your stock bar set up.. Hope this helps.

IRe: S4 owners and handlebars

Dear Gator:

I am in the process of installing the cyclecats on my S4. The guy at cycle cat is incredibly knowledgable and available, so if you are interested, just give him a call, to see if the bar end turnsignals will fit.

The stock bars are very uncomfortable for me and for a lot of other S4 riders. I sat on infoage's Foggy with the 'Cats and had to have them. They are adjustible to the stock height , slightly above and below. I realize this may not be an issue, it's the desire for the turnsignals that is driving your need.

Good luck!

You can put bar end turn signals on the Cycle CAt bars but there is a risk you need to be aware of. Cycle Cat puts a small screw in the end of the bar through the angle adjusting bushing. this is a safety feature to assure that the bar cant be pullout out of the riser if it isn't tightened adequately. If you leave this screw out you could run your wires through that hole and your in business. The turn signals themselves at least the good German ones from MotoWheels come with an assortment of rubber bushings which allows it to fit any bar hole diameter. In most cases you need to drill a hole through the bars to get the wires out. I don't like this with the Cycle Cat risers you wouldn't have to do that but you do need to be absolutely certain you tighten the bar clamps.

I wish I knew more about the setup in the Ducati S4 accessories catalog.

I guess what I should ask is, would any of you know if it is ok to drill a hole big enough for a wire to pass thru on the handle bar. Maybe a 1/8" hole all the way thru. I am concerned that it will weaken the bar. What do you think?

boring 1/8" through the length of the bar should be fine structurally to run the wire if you've got a long-enough bit that won't snap, but you'll have to bore it more than 1/8" at the end to fit the signals. not eactly sure how much, i'd have to check the signals' smallest diameter grommet, but prolly 1/2" ID, 2" deep. that may be pushing it for structural strength...

if you'd really prefer switching to handlebars, get the top-yoke off any '02+ monster. same bore and geometry for the forks and steering stem nut as the S4. i'd checked against a buddy's m750 out of curiosity before going to clip-ons myself.

So strati, your saying I can take the top off of an '02 and use the handlebars also....hmmmm......interesting, I guess I would have to mount the dash somewhere different.
Yeah I guess I forgot I do have to drill about a 1/2" bore about 2 inches into the end to fit the turnsignal in.
But that is the end of the bar and I would assume there is not as much pressure at that point.

interesting

Found this as I was diging around trying to find the plate I saw on Ebay to change from stock S4 to regular bar. As an update and this may be old news, PI has discontinued their getup on their website :( infact most all of the S4 stuff has been discontinued :(
