I traded my 99 900s in for a Tuono and have been missing the monster ever since
It seems Im sellin my Y2K Triumph S3 and was thinkin of purchasing another monster
I am lookin at either a new S4R or a used S4. The used bike has under 4K on it and is heavily modified in the engine area.

Was lookin for comments and or suggestions in regards to the two bikes.

Has anyone mounted a 2 into 2 full system from a S4 onto a S4R?

I don't think the S4 system will fit an S4R due to swingarm and footpeg issues, and probably other things.

I like my '02 S4, It's got enough ponies for me. I'm concentrating on making it easier to ride. I'll be dropping bucks on suspension before I'll pump the motor.

The R's got the bigger motor with more steam, and the SSS.

I bought my '02 S4 a few months ago and could not be happier, The S4R does make a few more ponies (a few like 7 or 8 ) and does have some trick stuff but I had a limit on what I wanted to spend. Love my S4, no regrets. If I had the money at the time I probably would have bought the "R" though just to be on the new model.

how much for the used S4 vs the new S4R?
they're both great bikes. the $$$ would answer the question for me.
the used s4 is listed at $10,900 with 3800 miles and numerous mods-includin a full termi low system

S4R is listed at $13,500 but not sure of my price yet

is the used s4 for sale at a dealer or privately? if from dealer, what kind of warranty you getting?
if private, it would take more than a full exhaust system to justify $10.9k. i've done a considerable amount of work to my s4 (mag rims, light clutch/flywheel, trick brakes, more, more, more) and i'm sure i wouldn't get any more than $9k or $10k for it. the used bike market is in the DUMPS!!!

Strati is correct, the used market is in the toilet. It is a buyers market right now.
Be patient and wait for the right deal.
I just got my S4 Foggy with 1600 miles for 10200, with all the goodies and 2 brand new Ducati Scudetto helmets thrown in.

I did have to spend $500 to have it shipped but the 2 helmets that don't fit me will pay for the shipping through Ebay.

I just saw a Foggy at a dealer in Texas for $15k, Now that's what I call GOOD consumer cognitive disedence.....

I went through the same thing in August and decided on a new 2002 S4. I like the SSS on the 4R and the white wheels. My buddy bought the 4R cause he makes more money than me! The dealer only had the blue with white strip which I like and thought it would be dumb to have two bikes the same color in a small town.
I have no regrets with the S4. It is my 3rd Duc and has plenty of power. I got it for $3900 less than what the 4R would have cost me plus have certificates for free 600 and 6000 mile service. I'm heading to the dealer in Colorado this weekend for my 600 mile service and replace the stock battery. It seems to me that all Ducati's are fun to ride!

S4 or S4R? or 1000 D.S?

Yeah it seems Im lookin about $14,200 out the door for the S4R and about $11,400 out the door for the S4
I heard they had some small issues with the S4-oil leak etc Anyone have any issues? I saw on the Ducati page that they are goin to offer the S4R in the Senna colors. Does anyone know if thats just in Europe or for the US also?

The used S4 is tenatively sold It has a fiull system marvic rims lighter rotors, pulleys, clutch etc It has about 7k in extras plus you get all the original pieces to sell on ebay :)

Anyone have opinions on the 1000 DS?I see they list it as the 1000 and the 1000S on the ducati page Does anyone know if there is a difference?

'02 S4 reliability / quality issues that I've experienced:

Rear brake was a squeakin' & squallin' weakling, replaced at 1300 with a BrakeTech iron rotor and Ferodo Platinum pads. Not perfect, but serviceable.

The vertical cylinder base gasket started leaking at about 1700 miles.

OEM battery (GS) started leaking at about 2300, replaced it with a Yuasa.

OEM Dragon Evo's shagged at 5250. ;D (All my fault, actually very impressed with 'em.)

Other than the occasional event of the ECU deciding it will continue to crank the starter without applying fuel and/or spark until I turn the key off, it's been good other than what I mentioned above.

Buy whichever one gives you the best wood.

-------------edit-----------------------

That modded S4 sounds like Scott S.'s bike...it's not black, is it?

Mine's not for sale!! :)

Rear brake is notoriuos for being crap on most Duc's.

Base gasket leak on mine was repaired under warranty. Not that big of a deal IMO.

Changed my battery out under warranty as well.

And damn my starter did that the other day as well. You think it's an ECU fart?
Just checking... ;D

I think it's an ECU fart because:
A) on '02 S4's (maybe all '02's) we are just sending a request signal to the ECU when we push the starter button. It looks at the clutch switch and sidestand switch (and who knows what else) and decides if we're permitted to have a running motor.

B)The handful of times it has happened to me, the engine has_not_started. If the button was sticking, the engine would start. If the starter solenoid was sticking, the engine would start, and the starter motor would run until the battery was unhooked.
