Watch for falling ice

I saw an f150 on the key bridge with its roof and windshield caved in. And a friend of mine from Philly just got smacked with his jetta. Smashed the windshield and dented the roof. The ice came from the top of a trailer on a semi truck. Result of the storm last week.

FYI....get the tag number of the offending vehicle should you get hit with ice from the top of their vehicle that they neglected to clear off...and report it to the State Police and they will give you a report for your insurance to get reimbursed for any damage from their insurance company!

I assume that includes the chunks that other cars run over and fling at you? What if you run over a chunk and fling it at your own undercarriage? Or should it be your responsibility to play dodge-em once the ice is on the ground?

it is your responsibility unless you catch the person whose vehicle it came off the top of....

I couldn't contain myself. I work at home on Wednesdays and had to go for a short ride this afternoon in DC. Mostly I was on 16th street NW, Military, Missouri, and 410. These are nice roadw when there aren't many cars out, as was the case today. I encountered no snow or ice on these roads. I did tempt fate momentarily though and entered Rockcreek park westbound off of Military. Not a good idea. It was really slick. Needless to say I took it really slow (otherwise I probably wouldn't be in condition to type) and got the hell out of there.

In a couple days we'll be golden... unfortunately in a couple of days I'll be in Minneapolis! Enjoy.

General note for everyone.

Be on guard for holes and pavement edges that have begun to crumble. I've seen a lot of cracking pavement that will be a pot hole out there, and some fulled formed ones. Also a few roads that have softer shoulders go brutalized by the plows and are coming apart at the edges.

Not sure if any CAMmers go through this way, but on the north/east side of N Kings Hwy in the Huntington area of Alexandria has a GIGANTIC pothole in it. That sucker must be 2 feet around at at least 4-5" deep. Even in a car, you could probably bend a rim running over it.

Hey it's a beautiful Saturday so be careful out there, especially thru Clifton (yates ford, henderson, clifton rd). I just drove thru in my cage on the way to work and man it's pretty tore up. Lots of sand near the bridges, lots of salt, and a gajillion pot holes in awkward places. It's not unsafe, just don't rip it up.

Careful riding in groups through there, lots of pot hole dodging/diving.

Have fun out there!

I met at least three new potholes in the two left lanes heading West on the Spur and the Dulles Toll Road. Each hole was only as shallow as the new asphalt that they pave on top of the older, milled asphalt -- couple of inches. And each was suspiciously close to preexisting potholes, whether filled or not.

The one at the first left-handed curve of the Spur looked like it spanned the width of the lane. Filled on 20060323! [clap]

Just an update, the potholes were being filled this morning, so lots of mounded fresh asphalt with the associated gravel. One big ol' rainstorm and it'll be clear.

Marked LEOs all over Reston and Herndon this morning. Spotted one deep in a parking lot on Elden at Ffx Cty Pkwy. Saw another one backed up on a grassy knoll on Sunset Hills, east of Target, as a third one rolled past in the opposite direction. And there was a fourth one on 267 east, past Reston Pkwy.

I can confirm, yesterday went out for a quick ride at work and saw two in my 5 mile loop: One was stopped on West Ox Rd facing east between Centreville Rd and Monroe St., the second was coming SE on Fox Mill Rd just off of Sunrise Valley. Coworker who was pulling in just as I was leaving said a third was set up on Sunrise Valley Dr just west of Fairfax County Parkway.

Also, noticed a lot of shitty pothole repairs around with a fair bit of loose gravel on the road.

There is a perma-road-hazard if you're going from 50 E to 495 S in Fairfax just south of Dunn Loring. It's on the entrance ramp to the beltway. It's a ridge that is tall enough to give a decent amount of head shake if you're still leaned over exiting the turn. It's a ton of fun to go over if you know it's there though. [thumbsup]

If you didn't think about it - watch out for tons of sand out there. Took advantage of the nice weather P-day and made a loop from Arlington towards the Leesburg area and back.

Georgetown Pike, Belmont Ridge, Gum Springs and anything in between had heavy helpings of sand/gravel that still occupies the middle of the lanes.

Also there's a number of housing developments going in, in the Belmot and Gum areas, right along the road. So the trucks are tracking a lot of dirt and even some 1-3 pound rocks.

The exit to Malcolm X north bound on 295 into DC. The exit ramp is so close to the on ramp. Usually a car is coming onto 295 giving me no time to get on the exit ramp and I usually rocket into the off ramp almost flying off into the woods. Here is a pick I mocked up. [thumbsup]

General warning - but seen at the Dulles greenway toll plazas.

Saw a single vehicle moto accident in the toll plaza coming from the greenway to the toll road. I'm guessing the rider lost traction on the oil strip in the middle.

Those toll booth oil slicks are *really* bad and you really must avoid them. I almost lost my biek one time when I stopped for a toll and put my foot - just my foot on that stupid slick. There's so much oil in those places that my boot had 0 traction.

So when you go through a toll, even w/ a speed pass make sure you're in the left or right wheel track. And if you have to stop to do the toll, whatch your footing.
