Hey guys I have a question. I am in discussions to with the owner of this monster.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2443578726

I know what he wants for it. and I just happen to be driving thru Vegas this coming sunday, and want to pick it up, but I dont know what I will have to do in order to get it registered here in Cali.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of fiery hoops of death that I will either have to jump through, or pay for?? I just don't want to buy this bike and have it cost me an arm and a leg to get a license.

Please Please help...I really do not want to buy new...especially if they are quieter. :'( :'( :'(

I just passed on buying a modified out-of-state car because I was worried about registering it. However, I think a motorcyle is easier (no smog, etc). Browse around the DMV website if you haven't already.

I'd offer to let you borrow the stock pair of cans sitting in my garage right now, but i don't think they'll fit that S4. Ask the seller if he still has the stock parts - I'll bet there's a decent chance he does.

I have never had a problem registering a loud motorcycle in California, when you get the DMV inspection done that is required on an out of state bike you don't have to have the motor running. They will check motor and frame VIN info and send you on your way.
That being said I can tell you what you could have a problem with, you CANNOT register a motorcycle or car in California that does not have one of two things. First and I am sure you will be fine with this, it needs to have something stating it has California Emissions on the VIN sticker or a separate sticker that says that OR it must have 7500 miles on the vehicle. I recently bought a bike (a Harley) from out of state that I had to resell in Nevada because I could not register it here. HTH

IIRC there is some arcane rule about mileage, like it has to have at least 3K miles on it to be sold as a used bike in CA, but you'd want to verify that at the DMV site.

PS, be sure to use the online appointment feature on their website when you do need to take it in. Make it first thing in the AM and you'll be out of there in 20 minutes. At least that's been my experience twice at the Corte Madera office.

Hey you guys are excellent, I made the guy an offer this morning and if all goes well, when my wife and I drive back up from PHX for our turkey day we will be bringing a new addition to the family and I won't be a poser her any longer....well I might still be a poser, but atleast I will have one bad S4

thank again for the info.

if you DO wind up having issues getting the bike inspected with the aftermarket system installed, note that monster stock mufflers are interchangable between model years AND displacement. the "gotcha" here is that this s4's got the full system on it so you'll need to swap headers. i've got a spare set of stock headers i'd be willing to loan you if you pay for round-trip shipping so in a pinch, you've got an out ;)
but as noted above, you likely won't have any issues. good luck on this one! looks like it's got some tasty bits installed!!

Good luck!

Again, you won't have any problems with the exhaust. The DMV isn't a smog inspection station and they don't know or care.

Also, there is no mileage restriction to worry about. If it were NOT a California legal bike, there are some loopholes that involve having over certain miles, but since your bike is California certified, you don't need to worry about it.

And, yes, make an appointment. At least here in So. Cal., if you have an appointment, you can get in and out in less than an hour. Without an appointment, it can take 4+ hours!

That is a sweet looking bike! Good luck, and post some pics!

Okay, I am offically bummed....Thanks guys, I just "Discussed" this purchase with the wife and she won.

It seems that I cannot think about just MYSELF now that we are married. ??? ???

anyway, I will be calling the very nice gentleman in Vegas and hopefully let him down easily.

Women...God I love them but sometimes they just don't have the same priorities.

I will not be deterred by this minor setback....I will have my duck....Quack Quack

Dave, Dave, Dave.......

This is why we strongly recommend that everyone buy a bike BEFORE getting married!

I didn't, but I had established my sports car credentials. So when I bagged the car for a bike, it was a much easier sell. More dangerous? perhaps
Less expensive? absolutely!

Good luck you POSER!

The only mileage rule is 7500 miles on any vehicle that was not designed explicitly to meet the California emission requirements.

I personally researched this in great detail four years ago when I brought my S2000 in from Oregon. At least with a bike, you don't have to go get it emission tested as I had to, even though the car was certified as a Low Emission Vehicle.

I'm with genius sell the wife because now she has established that her need's are more important than your's and it doesn't get any better the longer your married. Life's to short to wait and get it later or till the kid's are grown .Just make sure that if you do get a bike at least makesure you have something set up incase something does happen at least they will be supported.I'm not saying that your more important than she is but that there need's to be a balance on what the both of you want which will be very different most of the time but the trick I've found is the sharing of what the other person want's even if you don't want to.

Take a look at your smog emissions sticker. What does it say?

I bet it says something like "This vehicle conforms to US EPA and California regulations . . ."

On my bike, the sticker is under the seat.

It is only the SMOG emissions sticker that needs to say California. The noise emissions and safety stickers (which on my bike are on the frame) are not California specific - noise and safety are 50 state, Federal-only issues.

Oh, thanks. I was looking at the stickers on the frame. I'm guessing that Calif. must have the most stringent requirements if recent model Ducatis in all other states specifically say "Calif." Thanks.

Update on the bike -

spoke to Pete and we worked out the financials to a point that the wife could swallow it

I plan on heading to vegas during the 21, 22 weekend of Dec and picking it up then. I then head to michigan to visit my famn damily.

No, I cannot sell the wife, she understands my needs for a bike.

anyway, when I get back from Michigan, I will bring on the pics.
