Is it common for valves to need adjustment at around 3K miles? I know the scheduled check/adjustment is at 6K, but I *think* I hear some valvetrain noise coming from horisontal cylinder. This is my first v-twin and I have absolutely no experience as to whether or not some noise is normal. I know that if I heard it in my car - I'd be checking it ASAP.

I've read the excellent articles on ducatisuite (please change the red background!!!:) ) and cycleworks, and it seems easy enough to check and adjust the valves.

Also, do I have to do everything in standard sizes or will it be easier in metric? I never really got comfortable with inches. Plus I think Ducati sells shims in metric size, right?

Also, any places you guys recommend for getting the shims? Or is the dealer the only venue?

Thanks for any and all comments

considering that the two new 900s we've bought had a valve come from the factory with negative opening clearance and .010" or more under the closers, i suggest getting the first valve adjustment at 1000 miles.

check is pretty easy. adjustment is more involved, but it's still just parts that unbolt and bolt back together.

good luck,
chris

Based on me having to always either leave my bike overnight when the valves were checked, or bring it in in the back of a truck without starting the engine that day, I would guess the engine should be cold when checking the valves.

I'm going to BCM tomorrow for my 12K. Suzie was a little surprised that I'm riding up there tomorrow. Hell, I did the same thing for my 6k last year!

Anyway, she told me to be there by 7:30 so the bike can cool.

I guess Eric can do the RaceTech job on my springs and put the 41 tooth sprocket and new chain of first. She should be cool enough by then!
