If memory serves:

600 through 900 air cooled 2 valvers including the ST2 use same, say type A shim.

1000ds and water cooled 750 and 1000 4 valvers use same, say type B shim.

999R uses its own design, say type C.

The new 1098 4 valve water cooled uses a new type, say type D.

I have no idea about the water cooled ST3 and the new air 1100 2 valve.

I'd say you were pretty close, here's my tweak on it:

1000ds and DesmoQuattros water cooled 750 and 1000 4 valvers use same, say type B shim.

Non-R Testastretta use type C.

999R uses its own design, say type D.

The new 1098 4 valve water cooled uses a new type, say type E.

I have no idea about the water cooled ST3 and the new air 1100 2 valve.
My guess is that the ST3 and 1100ds use the type B.

i knew i need different shims between certain engines, i always just assumed it was valve stem diameter.

Just to clarify my previous post, I can't cite fact on the existence of types C-E.
I'm pretty sure there are 3 types of Testastretta, that's all....

afaik:

all 2v motors except the 1000 and 695 have 8mm valve stems, and use the same shims that have been around since singles i think. desmo bevels at least.

the 1000 and st3 have 7mm valve stems and use the same shims as the desmoquattro and testastretta motors, altho the shim range was extended with the intro of the 1000 motors. these shims all have part numbers ending in B, designating that they are the second generation 7mm shim, as opposed to the first shims used on early 851 that had non rotation bosses on them that were discontinued.

the 695 may have 6mm valve stems, i don't recall now. it would make more sense if they were the same 7mm as the 1000 tho thinking about it.

the '04 on 749S and 749R and '05 999R maybe have 6mm valve stems with tapered collets. that idea has been dropped.

the 1098 has 7mm valve stems i believe and uses a slightly modified shim much the same as the desmoquattro series. they have a chamfer somewhere for clearance i think. haven't seen them as yet, probably will someday.

My motivation for this is... a 2nd bike. I would really like to keep with the 1000ds shim family, so if I drop the $300 on a shim set, I can at least get dual use out of it.
