Quick question. I was wondering if anyone had a shortcut on changing the rear shock. The factory service manual says to take off the seat but that does not help get to the upper mounting nut. Do I need to take off the tank for easier access?

Thanks in advance.

Ok so I just did it. Not so bad.

1. Put bike on rear stand
2. Remove seat
3. Remove bolt holding rear of fuel tank (on the underside of the bike)
4. While pushing up on the rear of the tank, loosen the top mounting nut of the shock
5. Loosen but do not yet remove lower allen bolt
6. Carefully jack up the bike under engine enough to release preload on the shock
7. Fully remove both upper mounting nut and lower bolt
8. Jack bike up enough to remove shock from swingarm
9. Transfer top mounting hardware from old shock
10. Reverse process to install

Still have to test ride.

Post ride notes

The rear definitely seems more planted without as much bounce over bumps compared to stock. I'm not a track rider so I can't give any insight there.
The only problem now is that since the rear feels better, the front end jolts seem more pronounced. I should have had the front leg re-valved during the winter but wanted to see if the rear was any better.
I guess it's time to get the front re-valved :)
