On the bottom of my lower clamp there's an anodized aluminum plate with an upward curve. The dealer doesn't know what it does, and I can only guess it's got to do with routing air to the vertical cylinder.

It's held on with two screws, and doesn't seem to be on models prior to '03 or so.

Anyone know what that's about?

On my S4, it appears to be a pretty effective 'air dam' to help push air through the radiator. Of course, that's not an issue on the air-coolers...

I'll look at my bike tonight to see if there's any other fathomable purpose if you don't have a radiator.

I sense a minimalist philosophy.... ;)

The only possible function I can see for that 'air dam' on an air-cooled monster is to maybe prevent dirt/water thrown off of the front tire from making it past the front of the tank and up into your face. That's_really_a stretch, though, as the trajectory is perpendicular to the relative wind....

You can try it with it off, and see what happens.

BTW, your avatar pic is broken........
