Been surfing the web yesterday and I checked out the Motorcyclist page.
Strangely, the dyno numbers for the evo and the 1100 indicate 1 bhp more (not 5 as in the Duc ads) and actually less torque. The fuel consumption is higher in the evo! So what gives?
Are the dyno numbers true (yes, test done on different days) or are the ads true...is it all just hype?

Since one of the first modifications carried out is the replacement of the exhaust cans, I was surprised to note that NONE of the manufacturers provide bhp, torque or even dB numbers...and these cans cost $500 to $2000. So what gives, is it all hype (again)...does anyone have a dyno chart for the Termis?

I changed my stock cans to the Termi's for looks and sound upgrade only. I was drawn to the 2012 Monster 1100 Evo because of the Ducati Safety Pack which includes both the Ducati Traction Control and ABS brakes. If I cared for more HP I would have bought the 848 Evo. The Diavel is nice but too much money. The Diavel cans are ugly as well. Just my two cents.

Without a doubt, the DSP is good to have- traction control, ABS... I have a 09 1100 S without ABS, I bought it because I got a very good deal...though wish I had ABS.
Just curious though since the Evo is supposed to put out 5 bhp more- though the magazine report dosen´t show it. I wish mags would do some research and be more technical- my main gripe is about exhausts. They should do a test on various pipes for current bikes - power, sound, fuel consumption, pollution etc.
Now we are left with trying to figure things out- its an expensive decision ... cheers and happy riding

A few bhp here or there doesn't make much of a difference unless you are racing the bike and looking for gains against other competitors. But, I understand you want legitimate consistent data. Most non-race motorcycle owners swap out exhausts for appearance and sound reasons though. Right?

I agree with superGmoney if what they say is true about the hp then only a difference of 5hp is not noticeable no matter what anyone saids. abs is always a pro but I would say that if you had a super sport like 848, 1098, 1198 etc then with those types abs is a must because of the bikes capabilitys but on a M1100 I don't think it's some thing to worry about if you dont have it because it's a different type of bike all together. But that said it all depends on your riding style and skill.

And I think these days there is nothing wrong with non abs because if there was they would put abs on everything and the non abs versions would not be produced?

So don't worry to much but if you are looking to increase the hp you would have to inVest in a full system plus dymo etc to gain any real hp but that would come at a huge cost cash wise.

I had the same guestion when I bought my Monster back in April. I care nothing about TC or ABS. I thought about buying a Streetfighter because of the extra power. My last bike was an 04 Aprilia RSV R Factory so I was worried about the HP.

After a long debate I decided to buy a 09 1100s and decided to spend the extra money on upgrades. The suspension made the difference to me, I like the Ohlins. I found one with 2400 miles and it perfect condition. It came with a lot of upgrades already, I took the extra money and bought more upgrades.

To me the only big difference is the exhaust and the DSP, is it worth the extra money. To me it was not.


The only thing I HATE is the Hard strating issue. I can't seem to get it figured out.

More on 1100 S

My 1100S starts easily every day...this considering the poor gasoline we have here in Brazil. The best gas is Shell V-power and I now only use this. Yes, although it starts easily, it always stubles for the first few km of the ride.

I am very happy with the bike. Thoug- you don´t need to be a rocket scientist to design a good seat- most of the riders are males and it is painful to be pushed hard against the tank on braking!! Ducati could do better. I changed to the comfort seat (!!), this is slightly better but is still sloped forward. Maybe should make the designers ride the bike and really feel the discomfort!

Otherwise the bike is brilliant- stupendous suspension- great Sunday ride. Have just purchased the Termi titanium slip ons (godd a dood deal on ebay) and will be changing them some time next month. I suppose the fueling will improve at low revs- probably will not change the power output- the sound might improve (street legal cans) and ofcourse the fuel consumption will go up.

I have a Cagiva Elefant (Ducati 900 carb model) and when I changed the can, it lost a lot of low end torque- probably since the can reduced the back-pressure and didn´t do a good job in re-stuffing the fuel back into the cylinder . This probably won´t happen with the termis since the have a new command unit (ECU). Lets see.

A thought on seats

Sorry, I know this isn't a string dealing with seats, but I wanted to drop in my two cents about the previous post.

Originally when I started looking at M1100's, I was concerned about sliding forward on the seat, and the inevitable impact. Ouch. I ended up buying a used '09 M1100, and it came with the "low", thinner seat. I don't really need it as I'm 6'1", but it came with it, so I've become accustomed to it, and have never had a problem with the angle. The seat is covered with a pretty grippy material, so I don't have much problem with sliding either. I'm still very happy with it, and plan to continue on with it.

I've ridden the 1100 S and I own an 1100 EVO. The S suspension is much better than the 1100 EVO but I did notice one thing about the older 1100 and that was the amount of heat the exhaust puts out the left side of the bike right by the rider's leg when stopped at a light. On my test ride I was stopped for a long time due to construction and my leg was uncomfortably hot... like almost burning hot! The 1100 EVO doesn't seem to suffer from this problem. Other than that, there isn't much difference between the two. They'll both lift the front wheel pretty easily, from a performance standpoint they are nearly identical.

I guess it just comes down to do you want to wait for the right 1100 S to come up for sale on the used market or do you want to buy new?

As for seats. When braking I grip the tank with my legs so I haven't noticed the nut crushing so much.

Would love ABS on my 2009 M1100S but other than that I love this bike. A previous owner got a Corbin seat for it and it is very nice - never tried the stock seat and don't plan to so I have no basis for comparison (anyone want to buy my stock seat?). Have ABS on my 2008 Road King and it has saved my bacon a couple of times.

1100s hard start

I have a 1100s and love it it's Very fun to ride the stock seat is **** ( not having compared to anything else) it at first feels good but a bit of vigour in your riding and the balls cop it hard thinking of putting a monoposto seat but at nearly $1000 it had better be better ( ??? anyone know ) , I have a had a starting issue one or twice but after I put a PCV on it is awesome starts quickly every time with no second thought , maybe that's is what is needed, hope it helps ?
I got my 1100s and the S in particular because I wanted Ohlins suspession I like the way they look and work and will only get better after a re-spring to suit my weight , I am sure all the others can be made to work the same but I wanted the gold forks and that's that , I am now toying with the idea of anodising the rear shock body the same gold color for a real custom look.
As for the BHP factor really ,I agree with superGmoney if you can tell 5bhp you have a better ride feel than I do ,10-15 bhp is a more realistic feeling improvement because if you where sold on 5bhp I think your a marketing delight (a polite way of saying sucker )
If I wanted another power bike for which I have the option I would have got a high HP 4v duc or another Jap bike ( admit it we have all had em ) but I have more fun ,opps that should be FUN! playing around on my 1100 at nearly ( take this with a grain of salt but I have to tell myself ) legal speeds, this is way more appealing to me now than putting around on a big HP sport bike that rarely gets near where the power ( fun ) is at.
The heat that comes off the pipes is a little annoying but I would expect this to be a common problem for high or underseat pipes ,but I figure after i get the pipes ceramic coated this shouldn't really be an issue not to mention looking sweet....

Sorry for the thread jack, I'm new to owning ducati's and have a question regarding models. I have a 2009 Ducati Monster 1100 aircooled bike with the grey wheels.

Question is, are the models: Monster 1100, Monster 1100 S and then Monster EVO? I just want to make sure what I have when ordering parts and discussing. Lastly, what is the last year of the aircooled bikes...I get mixed info and should I have known would have waited and bought a newer aircooled bike.

The Monster 1100 Evo debuted in 2011 as a 2012 model and got a slight bump in power output but no S model. The 1100 Evo is similar to the earlier models but there are enough major differences that you cannot use many of the parts on either bike. The 1100 was phased out when the Monster 1200 debuted in 2014 if I remember correctly. Not sure if there was a 2014 1100 EVO or if 2013 was the last year. The 796 continued on well into 2014 until the liquid cooled 821 was released.

Thanks SDRider, just the info I was looking for...now I wish I would have known that the last year of the aircooled was 2013 to wait to get the right bike. I still love my 09 1100, but would have preferred the Ohlins and what not.

I think the 2009 was the last year for the awesome sounding dry clutch. Too bad - looks bad-ass with an open clutch cover. Just remember it's not a slipper clutch so if you downshift too hard the rear end will get real loose in a hurry - just sayin'

I forgot about the dry clutch. I rode a 2009 Monster 1100 S and it was so much better than the 1100 EVO. I remember pulling away from a light and hoisting the front wheel on my demo ride. Such a great bike. I loved my 1100 EVO but I kind of always felt that I bought the wrong bike. The suspension sucked and I think that dry clutch made launching the bike a lot more fun. :grin

Yup - the 1100S is a wheelie machine. Specs for chain tension is a whopping 61-63mm. Dunno if that's tightened up over the years.
