mods to stock exhaust

Just read the mods to stocks exhaust. I don't get it. how does cutting off the inner pipe inside the cans make the sound louder and flow better? It looks like the pipe simply flows from the inner muffler out thru the end cap. Sorry for my ignorance, I've never seen inside the stock cans other than pics.

once you cut them open. it becomes glaringly apparent.
The stock can has 3-4 baffles that you eliminate by essentially removing the internal end cap. Uncork and let the beast out!
This has been done on my bike. I had it at the dealer a couple weeks ago in the parking lot, and the dealer came out and gave me crap for doing it and how bad it's for my bike, and i'm running too lean now.. and the harmonic sound waves are bouncing all over the place now and affecting the bike in a bad way.ect.. Then goes on to tell me that it may be okay for city riding but on the highway to variate my speed up and down every 5 minutes or so.. not to run at a constant speed.? Is this some thing i really need to be concerned with,? I think the awesome sound may out weigh the damage it "may" be doing.??

Word.

sorry for the highjack, i thought it was relevent :p
Is your bike popping/ backfiring? Plugs brown? I'd be concerned if it was and they weren't. Sure there could be some bad harmonic ju ju but I haven't noticed any vibration or howl that would concern me. All the aftermarket pipes are straight though and similar in length and diameter... I think he is just jealous!

oh wait, let me guess... his next words we're:
"but we can sell you these termignoni slip-ons for $1000" [laugh]

exactly my thoughts..
Ducati exhaust cans have three chambers. Exhaust from the engine goes to the first, goes through some tubes into the third, back through some tubes to the second, then through a single tube and out the end. You can cut the tubes in either of the last two chambers to let a bit more sound out.

Cutting just the center tube in the rear chamber means that exhaust gasses flow from 1 to 3, then out, rather than 1 to 3 to 2, then out the small tube.

When I had the Monster, I cut the tubes in the third (rear) chamber. For my ST2, I cut the tubes out of the middle chamber. They both sound similar. The result is that it sounds like a proper Ducati, but isn't nearly as loud as any of the straight-through pipes. The disadvantage is that they still weight about 18 pounds instead of 6-7 like aftermarket pipes.
I have ordered a set of termy slip-ons, remaping chip and air filter........$1400.00, ouch! I'm just looking for the Ducati sound, and maybe a small increase In power. But the dealer told me the only thing that works on a S4Rs is this system...or the $2100.00 "full system". Man I thought Harley had balls for the price they charge for accessories!
Thanks Scott. That makes sense now. I noticed you live in Pleasanton. I'm in San Ramon. We should get together for a ride sometime.
