I have been a few east bay rat functions and have noticed that most of their bikes dont have any mirrors or tach at all. anyone know the rules on this in cali? thanks

as far as I know and what I've read on boards in the past is that you have to have at least one mirror on a moto in Cali. I don't *think* there are rules regarding Tachs. In fact I know that many bikes in the past came with no tachs and were Cali legal.

(a) Every motor vehicle registered in a foreign jurisdiction
and every motorcycle subject to registration in this state shall be
equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view
of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of
such vehicle.
Every motor vehicle subject to registration in this state, except
a motorcycle, shall be equipped with not less than two such mirrors,
including one affixed to the left-hand side.
(b) The following described types of motor vehicles, of a type
subject to registration, shall be equipped with mirrors on both the
left- and right-hand sides of the vehicle so located as to reflect to
the driver a view of the highway through each mirror for a distance
of at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle:
(1) A motor vehicle so constructed or loaded as to obstruct the
driver's view to the rear.
(2) A motor vehicle towing a vehicle and the towed vehicle or load
thereon obstructs the driver's view to the rear.
(3) A bus or trolley coach.
(c) The provisions of subdivision (b) shall not apply to a
passenger vehicle when the load obstructing the driver's view

I couldn't come up with anything regarding a Tachometer, but I didnt try that hard either.

Not quite... A motorcycle needs a mirror. Everything except a motorcycle needs at least 2 (but a motorcycle needs at least one).

As far as I can tell, it doesn't specify side for motorcycles. It only says that cars need to have 2 mirrors (rear-view, and LEFT side), minimum.

Lots of the EB Rats have total in process frankenstein bikes too so they may not have gotten around to putting it on or just don't care. Anything good coming up from those folks? ;D

I Don't know Gerald, the way I am reading it it seems that the LEFT side applies to cars, not bikes. Another words, if you only have one side view on a car, it has to be on the left side to go along with your other mirror, the rear view.

The second paragraph says pretty much that, and it starts out saying that it is for a vehicle EXCEPT motorcycles. The first paragraph applies to Bikes, and in there it doesn't not specify a side.
