I thought the 9k mile (about 15k km) service involve cleaning and/or replacing the air filter? (Maybe I'm wrong. Have to check the manual again.)

While i had the 15K km service, the dealer didn't even check the filter.
I ask him about it & he told me that this is not necessary... so i did it my self.

The filter was very dirty! even sun ray could not get through it.

15k service just says to clean the air filter under the tank and the filter by the exhaust. 30k is when you are supposed to swap in a new filter.

Just a curiosity. How difficult is to remove the tank on the 1200 ?


Looks odd for me that the air filter can last 30K Km , so i decided to replace it...it's only 38$ for the OEM filter & for my bike & me it tooks a big difference ! the bike now runs better for sure & i'm happier :cool:

20 min work at home. :)

Just a curiosity. How difficult is to remove the tank on the 1200 ?
I am also wondering the same thing. I have the WSM and it seems pretty straight forward. Im just worried about the part were I have to disconnect the fuel lines and lift the tank. Last thing I want to do is scratch my tank. I have a brand new BMC filter to put in it.

1. Slide elastic under the ignition switch cover out of knob. No need to remove the ignition switch cover.
2. The tank should be near empty (maximum one third) if you go in the highest possible position (else gasoline leaks through the tank`s inlet).
3. Remove the tube of the tank ventilation (front left side). If you don't it will be removed by lifting the tank.
4. You need some strength to lift the tank. It is very tight with the cables on the left side of the air filter.
5. Don't forget to reconnect the tube of the tank ventilation while setting the tank in place.

Thank you for the instructions. One more question about point 3)

Can you remove the tube for the tank ventilation just by pulling it or do you need to remove any clips ? I am asking because it is not clear from the service manual.

Today I installed a BMC filter in the Monster. What a pain in the ASS! Getting the tank off was just a matter of following the service manual so next time it will be easier since I know how to do it now. The big pain was that the BMC filter was just a tad to wide so I had to shave/sand off some of the modeling that houses the filter element.

*FYI* the vent and overflow hose for the fuel tank are held on with a clip and are very hard to get to. I found it easier to just lift the tank with them still connected to the tank and then just reroute them to their original location when I put the tank back on.

This is what I do. I leave the hoses connected and just reroute them through the trellis frame. Makes life easier.

Did you notice a difference with the BMC filter on how the bike runs?

Honestly, Id like to say yes I noticed a difference but if I did I could be lying. Its very hard to tell. I took it up and down the street doing 1st and 2nd gear pulls into power wheelies. Its such a fast bike regardless so my brain probably wouldn't be able to tell if I gained a few hp or Tq.

I had no clip but my 1200s was one of the first delivered in europe. I complete my instructions.

1. Slide elastic under the ignition switch cover out of knob. No need to remove the ignition switch cover.
2. The tank should be near empty (maximum one third) if you go to the highest possible position (else gasoline leaks through the tank`s inlet).
3. Lift the tank a little bit standing on the left side of the bike. You need some strength to lift it. It is very tight with the cables on the left side of the air filter. Remove the tube of the tank ventilation (front left side). Now you can lift the tank till you reach the highest position or you fix it in the desired position with a wooden strip or something of that kind.
4. Don't forget to reconnect the tube of the tank ventilation while setting the tank back in place.

BTW: I`ve tried the Pipercross filter. What becomes immediately apparent: The bike gets noticeably louder. I uninstalled the filter but will give him a chance later. The airflow was in my eyes significant higher and I had at that time no RapidBike installed. At lower engine speeds the bike felt less powerful, at higher speeds more. But this is only my feeling, not proved on a dyno.
