HELP!!! throttle is screwed up!!

761 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  hiero
i don't know what the crap happened but my throttle is f***ed up. it feels like the cable doesn't catch or something. i turned it on in neutral and it revved immediately to 11 rpm without me revving it!! i stopped it and pulled back on the throttle and it felt really wierd, like it's stuck. then it went forward!!! it feels like the cable's busted or loose. it does pull back but it doesn't snap back forward and it goes forward with the slightest pressure. can anyone help?

Start with the simple. Check for the most common cause of this - grip rubbing on either the throttle housing or the bar end. (They creep either way under normal use). If that's it massage it away from what its rubbing on.

If that isn't it, open the throttle housing just enough to check the cables where they attach to the throttle tube.
checked grips: ok
i was going to try to disassemble it to get to the throttle body, but figured i should just take it in. i just hope i don't get screwed on my warranty.
+1 on mark1305's comments, sounds like it's catching somewhere and one likely place that happens is inside the throttle housing on the bar, the cable likes to pop out of the plastic guide if mess with it at all... even if you haven't messed with it, it could have worked out etc...

and of course, follow the cable all the way down to TBs and see if there are any binding points...

then again, it's under warranty, so you could just have the dealer check it out too...
It's not that hard to take the throttle assembly apart and to follow the throttle cables all the way to the throttle bodies or carburetors. Especially on a Monster.

I had some throttle issues on my ST2, so gave in and disassembled everything. After lubricating the throttle cable (just one on that bike, while the M900 I had used two) and adjusting a few things on the throttle itself everything was totally smooth.

It should take you less than an hour to go through everything and have it all back together again, assuming you're at all mechanically inclined.
the cable came off the track and was seriously mangled. it's at the dealer and fixed but the tech rightly didn't feel comfortable letting me ride off since it was badly mangled. so he's ordering a new one and it's under warranty which is great, but i'll be without it for a week. sucks. thanks for all the advice.

good to hear you figured it out and the dealer's taking right good care of you [thumbsup]
