dot 5 is not compatable with dot 3,4,5.1

It is silicone based and has a tenency to shrink rubber
dot 3,4,5.1 is glycol based and swells rubber
mix them and rubber tends to harden
brakes tend to not work with the seals hard as plastic.

just curious i read the directions and it says it's ok to use it on dot 3,4! think i can get napa to pay for any damages done to my bike? ok it's bad to use dot 5 i guess i'll stick with dot 4. damn corrosive thing!

 

I doubt the dot 5 hurt anything, I've known many people thast flushed dot 4 out of their system and put in dot 5 instead. it's just that you can't mix the two. you'll have to flush out what's in there once you've added, and go completelyu one way or the other.

 

I've heard that the rubber seals in Brembo brake equipment are not compatible with DOT 5 fluid.
But also, there's folks here who say they have done it with no problems.

IIRC, those who have done it, have completely disassembled and cleaned all the brake parts, then reassembled and used the DOT 5.
I did it on a Yamaha many years ago, but that's not Brembo stuff.
