So, I took the plunge this weekend and changed my own oil for the first time on my '02 750. Everything went smoothly considering it was my first time (besides the mess ).

My problem is that I have no temperature reading at all now. All i get is "---" on the digital guage. I know I can ride the bike like this and estimate when it's warm but i just want to know what could have gone wrong.

It was working fine before the oil change, could I have fouled something up without even knowing?

Any advice appreciated.

Make sure your wire is connected to your sensor the boot may be on but your clip may not be hooked...also I pulled that wire out of the top of the loom it is only soldered together up by the stearing head.. look under the boot first below oil level window.. then if that is connected follow the conduit up to the main loom.. it is an orange and white wire... hope this helps.

Try unplugging, cleaning and replugging the wire that goes into the sensor on the strainer plug

That's exactly what it is. I had the same thing wrong with my 03 800 and it was replaced under the warranty. It's OK to ride but get it fixed and you'll feel relieved.
