I would check fuses first. If the lights are gone completely, it is unlikely the battery. Especially since you were just riding it. Even the tiniest bit of juice in the battery will power up the lights enough to see them.

My guess is faulty ignition relay under saddle.
If battery is OK and no electrics work when turning key to ON.

I just checked the fuses. none were blown. Now comes the odd part, I turned the key and now I have power WFT ??? . I'm afraid to take the sucker out to run my errends hate getting stuck somewhere and be stranded. No way in hell am I leaving my Duc. anywhere while I make a call to get towed.

perhaps a loose connection somewhere?
i had this happen on one of my bikes (luckily it has a kick start) and it was annoying as hell. Turns out the terminals to the battery weren't tight.

Now comes the odd part, I turned the key and now I have power WFT .

When the ign relay is about to fail, they do that. Check w a fresh one.

Is ignition relay a ducati only part or can pick one up anywhere? Local Duc. dealer isn't very local. OH, and thanks everyone for your help! [thumbsup]

Take the hood off it, you`ll see how it works. Easy fix, just bend copper plate a little.
After that, check w hood off a couple of times so it works properly when ign is turned on.

Lift the seat, find the yellow really, PUNCH IT HARD (or tap it with a screwdriver handle). Your bike with then work. Seriously, mine's been doing that for the last year and a half.

tried the punch tap method, no go.grrrr! Now my Duc. is stranded in front of my girl's parents house. Does anyone know if if the ignition relay(part # 287401.41A) is a Ducati only part? i ask because both not so local Duc. dealers are out of them.

Take the hood of it, it`s an easy fix.
Punch an electric part HARD, well..... :-X

When you turn the key, do you at least hear the click of the relay?

I had similar symptoms, but mine was dying a slow death. When I would turn the key, if I walked away for a few minutes, it would miraculously turn on (sometimes). It turned out that I had a broken brake light connector. The connector's clip broke and it was sometimes connected and sometimes not. It would also occasionally bounce against the frame when the circuit was energized, killing that yellow relay. The bike would continue to run, but it would cause the ignition circuit never to close. I still have a little scar on the frame from where the lead was shorting to the frame.

I would recommend going over every electrical connection on your bike. It's a major pain in the a**, but that's your most likely culprit from what you've said. Disconnect, inspect, and reconnect every single connection, testing the bike after each one.

Good luck! Electrical gremlins are so frustrating. (You might get more people looking at your post if you put the year, model, and mention of potential electrical issue in the subject line of your post. Your subject isn't very descriptive of your problem.)

 

Thanks for everyones input. I just replaced the butterier . Now it turns on. Hit the ignition it will turn over once maybe twice then all I hear is a very fast clicking sound. Before all of this happened the starter would take forever to turn over( i would hit ignition and long pause then turn over). IS my starter dead?

 

Is your new battery fully charged? Make sure your new battery is fully charged and get it load tested. Then check all your connections for voltage drop. This is done by placing the leads of your volt meter in parallel (positive on one side of the connection, negative on the other) each the connection and applying the load (attempting to crank the engine). An ideal reading would be 0 V. Less than .2 V for each connection or .5V for the whole circuit is desireable. This includes ground.

Or for a quick test either confirm your battery is good or use a known good battery. Go directly from the battery to the starter. If it now cranks well your starter is good. Caution: make sure the bike is in neutral. Now go back and check voltage drop.

 

I'm having a similar problem, went to start my '99 M750 and got no lights, no juice at all. Checked the forum and took all the suggestions, checked battery connections, etc. The ignition relay is buzzing loudly when I turn the key, but banging on it didn't produce any juice. I don't want to pull the relay apart without knowing what I'm doing. How do you take it apart to bend the copper plate? Should I just replace the relay and see if that works? Thanks for any help anyone can provide, I need to get it running as soon as I can.

 

Just for reference, I had a similar situation with the first start of the year....turn key - all lights on - press starter button - everything just died.....turned out to be a not quite fully charged battery and a not quite tight enough ground connection on the battery.

 

My 1999 Monster 750 has no power when I turn the key. The lights don't come on at all, but the ignition relay buzzes. I charged the battery fully and it made no difference. I ordered a new ignition relay and plugged it in, and it made no difference. It hasn't run for weeks, and I'm worried that it will be harder to bring back the longer it sits.
I have seen people talk about a ground connection at the back of the motor, near the rear set. I can't find it to check it, I even looked at the electrical system diagram in the parts book. Can anyone tell me where this ground is, and maybe some other things to check? I'm really getting stressed out over this.

Mine did the same (and the "buzz" from the relay was more of a pathetic whine) - recheck the connections on the battery. Mine appeared tight and good but all I did was take them off and retighten them and everything has worked fine since.

 

Thanks, Mark, I will do that. They really seem tight, though. I would like to check this other ground wire that I've read about, at the rear of the motor, if I could find it. This weekend I will check every connection on the bike, then I'll start considering taking it to the dealer. I can't let it sit much longer, it'll be 90 degrees soon here in Florida.

 

All ended well for me, it was the battery. Got a new AGM battery and there seems to be no other problems with the electrical system. I am very grateful for the replies to my questions, I just didn't realize the battery wasn't taking a charge like it should.
