Lots of Mods

Do all work myself

My speedometer quite working

The guages sweep and the lights are on

the tach works but the speedo and the odometer don't

Should I be looking at the cluster as an issue or the pickup at the rear tire?

How does one go about testing that pickup?

it is a metal tab, I assume magnetic, since it seems to pickup the brake rotor bolts as they pass by

Do these go bad often?

or

might it be something in the cluster?

if it is in the cluster how would you test that without getting a new pickup?

The rear sensor is a magnetic hall effect type sensor. You could check it with a DVOM set on Ohms and check its resistance. You can also check operation with your DVOM set on AC voltage or duty cycle while the wheel is spinning.

My advice is always "check the easy to check and cheap to fix stuff first".

First thing I'd do is check the wiring between the pickup and the speedo. That wire ends up on the swingarm so it bends every time the rear suspension bounces. It's the easiest thing to check, use a continuity meter (or cobble one toogether with a bulb and battery and a few bits of wire) and check the wire is good, and that it stays good if you bounce the bike up and down on the suspension.
