My bike was running poorly, if at all, the last few weeks and that have sent me on a crusade. She couldn't take acceleration or she would die and finally she wouldn't start at all. I have rebuilt the fuel pump, checked hoses, drained tank, new fuel filter, removed and cleaned carbs, and put in some new gas. She would crank but wouldn't start until I opened the gas tank lid. Once I opened the gas tank lid she fired right up and I took off for a few 100-yard ride. As a FYI...why didn't she start until I took off the gas tank lid and does this mean something else needs to be fixed/replaced?

Thanks!

Sounds like the vent passages in you gas cap are plugged, or the vent hose is kinked or plugged. I have no FHE, but have read that the passages in the cap are quite small and plug easily. That's why I put a fuel filter on my vent hose when I desmogged my bike.

Several other folks have experienced the same problem.

Not sure what year/model you're riding, but on the carbed bikes (and I think pre-S4 framed EFI bikes) there's a little rubber nipple under the cap to the rear of the fill hole that can be pulled out to let the tank vent past the seal on the cap. In the past, it was pretty common advice to just get rid of that thing on the day you get the bike home.

Sorry I didn't add it earlier but my bike is a 98 M750. I'm going to work on that rubble nipple and see if I can clean it up. Thanks for your input guys!

Somewhat on topic, my tank whines (farts?) when sitting in the sun, which I believe is vapor escaping out the cap seal. In contrast, another Monster I've seen drains (pisses?) some fuel when in the sun. I wonder what's different here?

That's enough pissing and whining!

whiners have probably removed the emissions stuff.
