Fuel Tank Heat Shield

2905 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Bikeguy1000
The first time I worked on my bike about 6 weeks ago, I discovered the fabric heat shield was badly deteriorated and crumbling all over the motor. Needless to say I removed it. Of course the first time the bike hit 250* the tank and fuel got hot. I ended up ordering up an 18”x18” Moose Racing fiberglass/aluminum backed stick on heat shield right away, but has been on back order for awhile. Finally showed up today so I got it installed right away. The size was perfect. Didn’t get it completely centered, which will probably drive me nuts even though you can’t see it.:ROFLMAO: Hopefully it does its job and keeps the tank cool.

You may wish to consider also protecting the fuel filter and fuel hoses from engine heat.

I had thought about that as well. Just haven’t gotten that far. What brand did you use for the hose wraps/tubing?
I honestly though that "stuff" under the tank was sound deadening and have thrown it in the bin on every Ducati i have ever owned (only ever had monsters and Supersports) to no noticeable adverss affect!

Arevyou guys having fuel vaporization issues?

No. But fuel has been scientifically proven time and time again to not burn worth a crap when it’s hot.

Can you flesh out this concept? How does that work?
I mean, fire is very hot by nature.

Because fuel molecules, like water and most other liquids, expand more and more the hotter it gets. Colder fuel means denser fuel, which translates to more HP. Hot fuel also leads to detonation and pre-ignition problems from running too lean from the fuel not being dense enough, which if gone on for too long can lead to catastrophic failure.

Probably this: Hose and Cable Insulation and Protection - Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies

The gold looks awesome (yes, I know, you can't generally see it :) )... do you have a link for where to purchase that? Was just replacing the battery in my Monster and the black sound deading/heat shield stuff is falling apart big time.
Thanks

I lived in Germany as a kid. And I have been back many times. Weather is a bit warmer here.
