There has been some talk about going to Indianapolis for the US Grand Prix race on July 2nd. I was at the race last year and it was a great time (even considering the tire debacle).

MAybe we could get a bunch of different groups to meet in Indy on Friday night or Saturday morning for qualifying. I have posted this on the DRILL board as well, they are close to me because I have not club here in Iowa.

Here is the link to the indy webpage.

Is anyone interested in forming some groups?

p.s., If there are any big F1 fans out there, I will be attending the Montreal GP the week prior to this one. I will not be riding there from Iowa though. Is anyone else going?

I would be interested, and am in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I would really like to go to a race again in europe this year, GP instead of F1, but this would be easier.

Where would you be riding from?

You're in Cedar Rapids, SWEET!! I just moved up here mid-summer and was looking for someone to ride with the whole time. What are you riding? I'm on an S2R. That's also awesome that you're into F1. Maybe we can plan a carpool over to Chicago, and hook up with the DRILL club and ride to Indy?! Anyway, thats quite a ways away... and there's lots of F1 races in the meantime. What side of town are you on?

If you are planning to go to the F1 Race in Indy anytime in the near future, I think that 2006 will be the year to do it. The FIA is going to bend over backwards to woo back the Amercian fans after last years debacle. Personally I would like to do Montreal and then go to Indy. I have been to Montreal 3 times (85, 86, and 2003) and it is always a GREAT RACE!! I have also been to Detroit (86) and Hockenheim (96). Even better would be to head out to Laguna Seca after Indy (and Montreal) and go watch the Moto GP race! Now that would be a great road trip!

Count me in! I was already planning on riding there for the formulapod.com party. If anyone is into F1, these guys do a fantastic podcast. They are planning on having a party in coordination with GP Tours.

I've been an F1 fan long before I even thought about a motorcycle, so to have a bunch of Monsters at the USGP would be killer!

I loosely follow F1, but I do have to admit that the Michelin tire fiasco at Indy really caught my attention. The discussions afterward (including Despain on Wind Tunnel) were lively, and I couldn't help but feel a large amount of animosity toward Michelin and Max Mosely. I've also felt for years that F1 will have a real chance of success in the US once Bernie exits -- but that may not happen in my lifetime... ::)

For those of you that were at the USGP last year, was it really as bad as the media made it out to be? Was I just pulled into a media-induced vortex about the whole thing? Should I end my boycott of French stuff (and Michelin tires, in particular) and hunt down some tix for an F1 race? I'd be interested in hearing other opinions about this...

Bluemoco,

I wasn't at Indy in 05, but I have been to enough F1 races to know that if I had, I would have been TOTALLY PISSED OFF!! Personally I think that the 7 Michelin teams should have at least started the race and then pulled off.

FWIW, there is NOTHING like the start of an F1 race!! I stood next to the track in Montreal in 1985, which was the last year of the fire breathing 1500cc Turbo Motors where the BMW engine was reputed to have 1200BHP (only because that was the MAX the dyno could measure). I was literally about 6 feet away from Keke Rosberg's Williams! To see the entire grid rip past me in about 2 seconds was truly AMAZING!! Aryton Senna then came around in the lead about 2 seconds clear of the rest of the field after 1 lap!

NOTHING sounds like an F1 car!!

I know I would also have been disappointed to see most of the field pull off the grid and call it a day. Those Michelin tires were supposedly good for 7-10 laps, right? Why not just run the cars for 10 laps and do pit stops during the race for fresh tires? I was surprised to see teams and manufacturers so willing to forgo championship and constructors' points.

In the aftermath of the USGP at Indy, there were a few rumblings about how the Bridgestone-shod teams should have acquiesced to the installation of a chicane. In my mind, the Bridgestone teams did the right thing -- show no mercy for the other race teams with inferior tires. I'm certain that if the situation were reversed and the 6 cars running Bridgestone tires couldn't safely compete, the Michelin teams would go on with the race...

Overall, I still think I'd immensely enjoy an F1 event. A buddy of mine from business school has attended the Australian GP, and he says it's absolutely amazing to watch in person.

Maybe I can talk the Wifey into a "European Delivery" for a new Duc, sometime during the F1 season? ::)

Last year was the only year I have missed (thank God).....I will be there with the wife and another couple (he rides Ducs as well)

Let me know if there is a gathering.....would love to attend.

I've been 6 straight years, but after last year I vowed never to go back to Indy... But if there's a Monster meetup, maybe I'll go back on my word.... Although riding from California will probably not happen..

I'm thinking about Montreal next year also, if not going to one of the 'endangered' races like Spa or Silverstone.

I'll be at Indy as I have been every year since it has been in Indy. I camp right across the street from the track. I may be able to host the get together.
I camp in the fancy-schancy small camp area. You can not drive into the area unless you pay $50 for the weekend. BUT, I camp in the back of the area which is along a residential street. Visitors could park there and walk 50' to my camp site.
Anyway, maybe folks are into meeting downtown. I stay at the track the entire weekend.

I have been to Montreal 3 or 4 times in the 1990's. Awesome city with fantastic night life. The actual venue is better at Indy though. Indy has much more going on at the track. Of course they don't have the Thursday pit team boat race like Montreal, but that's another story. >:D

Well, I have locked down plans for the races this year. I plan on going to Montreal with some work people, and then Indy with others. For Indy, I'm going to be riding from Iowa to Chicago to meet up with the D.R.I.L.L. group, and then ride down to the race from there. The DRILL team is the local Ducati Riders of Illinois group. I plan on buying tickets for both races toward the end of February. Lets start on planning a get together. If you're interested, PM me.

The problem with indy is they kick you out of the track so early - and the night life is pretty boring. You'll have to make your own fun.

I got to do 911 testing for Nextel last year(2005) the week before the 500. I spent 7 hours testing the sites pointing into the track and have a great picture of me kissing the bricks. When I first got there, they wouldn't even let me into the paddock to do testing, but after the Speedway PD contacted track management, I was given a day long full access pass to every part of the track except the general offices. I also was given a security guard escort the whole time I was there and he was the one who took my pic a few times for me.

On a side note, I am in Iowa as well(NE of Des Moines) and would love to attend Indy, but my work schedule is only going to allow me one week long vacation during the summer monthes and I have reserved that for the trip out to Ouray.

I don't want to piss anyone off but I was wondering, why do they have the US GP at Indy anyway. I am no F1 expert but it just seems to me that there are better tracks in the US to host the F1 event.

Anyone know why they have it at Indy?
