Fork service issues. 09 686

Hey everyone. Recently i took my forks to a mechanic to have the seals changed and whatnot.

Upon filling the forks back up one of the forks ( being the right side) is much stiffer than the left. He filled the forks to spec and is concerned with how stiff it is.
Is this normal?

Isn't one side different to the other internally? I.e. compression on one side and rebound on the other.

This is what ive heard but me and my mechanic want to double check that before we throw them on the bike and give it a go
If your mechanic has had them apart he should know if they're different internally.

This is a question without a straight forward answer, since there were three different fork types fitted to the 696 at different points of the model cycle.
As well as the Showas, there were KYB and another that I am not sure about, but possibly Marzochi.
Below is the parts breakdown of the 2010 696 forks. It shows that the left and right forks have different internal components.

And below is the parts breakdown of the 2012 696 ABS forks. These are different forks to those shown in the 2010 diagram, identifiable by the drawings and the part numbers. It is less clear whether there are differences between the left and right forks though.

And below is the same for 2014. The part numbers have now changed format slightly (no full stops separating groups of numbers) but a quick glance seems to indicate that the digits are the same as 2012.

So to summarize this info: for the 2010 model year there were definitely differences between the left and right forks.
In 2012 the forks changed. They may still have been differences between left and right, but it is less clear.

I would think that if they are not adjustable, there would be no difference between the sides. If there is an adjustment knob/screw on them, one should be on top and one on the bottom of the fork for the comp and rebound.
