Fitting 900SS motor in my 600Monster? Questions before attempt..

I have a 95 600M (see this months feature) and the right rear engine mount has cracked clean off, this engine has done 50,000K's but still drives well.
Getting the cracked mount rewelded is one option, but considering the labour involved I'm considering an upgrade to a 900 carb engine >:D. The basic idea is to have more power without trading up to a new bike.

I have found a 1997 SuperSport engine, that needs carbs and a starter motor, it includes the exhaust headers. Here are my questions.

Can this engine fit into my 1995 frame?

Is there any modifications I must do so to make it fit?

Can I use the starter motor from my 600?

Can I use the carbs from my 600?

Is there any other options I have for front brakes (apart from upgrading to 900 dual disk) remembering I have a single front?

Will there be a rear-sets (outriggers) problems? Or is an upgrade to aftermarket mandatory?

I understand that dyna-coils and a full jet-kit/dyno tune will be needed and have the support of my mechanic to do either a swap or fix the 600 (Thanks Ron [thumbsup]) but is there anything else i need to consider, ie charging system, coils, timing etc??? ???...

ORRRR.......... are my better off just repearing the 600 engine mount (I know its cheaper), but is a 900 2v worth the swap?

Yes the engine will fit in your frame with no modifications necessary.

Yes you can use the same starter.

No you cannot use the carbs. They are too small.

Your single disk will work fine many people take off one of their fronts to save weight. If you simply want to upgrade to duals then try to find a dual line and extra front disk/caliper setup on ebay. You may need a new front wheel if yours does not have provision for the rotor.

Your rearsets will work fine.

Charging system will be the same. The coils should also work fine but I am not positive.

Yes the 900 swap is worth it. What are you waiting for. [thumbsup]

All carbed Monsters use 38mm Mikuni CV. Not sure if the spacing &
other physics are the same.
Of course 900 is differently jetted.
I am pretty sure the 900 carbies use a 40mm mikuni but I could be wrong.
38mm across the board, but many important parts are different. If you buy carbs it makes sense to go for the flatsides
Id love to afford FCR's but probably can't straight up. Hence I wasn't sure if my 600 carbs would work on the 900. I plan to rejet/needle/tune them on the 900/dyno anyway, could that help things?

I'm also thinking along the lines of exhausts... the engine comes with the headers but no mufflers. Will my 600 slip-ons fit the 900 too?

I really appreciate your help/advice. - Chris

Howie, could you elaborate on this for me a little more? What parts are they, is it jets or needles or floats? or maybe even the intake length?? - Chris
Due to diffrent stroke & other i/d your headers won`t fit.
Different frame = SS headers won`t fit.
Pretty sure it`s only jets differing in carbs but have to check my Haynes to be sure.

OK, here goes (maybe)

900 600

Carb # Carb #
BDST 38-B129 US BDST 38-B132 BDST 38-B159

Main jet Main jet
140 132.5

Needle jet Needle jet
Y-2 Y-2

Needle Needle
5C19 US 5C37 5CJ1
Position Position
4 from top US 3 3

Slider spring Slider spring
? 730-10026

Idle jet Idle jet
40 40

Idle air jet Idle air jet
70 60/1.4(?)

The numbers on the 600 may be way wrong since you have an older engine. A Haynes manual is probably a better source for this

There also may be other differences like internal drillings for the slides.

Hopefully other posters will correct and/or fill in the blanks.

No idea what differs in types. Slides maybe?
Air jet 1.4 in Howie`s table are the jets under diaphragms.

(Googled, their question: Did you mean Mikuni BDSM? ;D)

Thanks greenmonster, but let me get this straight. Neither the SS headers will fit onto my bike NOR will my OEM headers fit onto the 900. Hence I need completely custom headers reguardless?? (or have I miss understood?) - Chris
Needtourque, Howie and greenmonster. Thank you all for your help. Looks like a 900 conversion is coming up.
I pulled out and refitted the old motor myself, hence I will fit this 900 unit myself too. - Chris

ps. providing greenmonster clears up this header issue... as I don't know if I can strech to custom headers.
if you can't use your headers, you might ask around the board for some stock 900 headers. i don't think i'd be going out on a limb if i assumed that some of us 900 guys have swapped out stock headers for a full exhaust system.

Good call hence, I'm kinda waiting for greenmonster to clarify that point. I'm sure I missunderstood though. - Chris

You have not misunderstood.
And zarn02 is right, just find 900 headers. And then your 600 mufflers will fit.
Btw, getting a secondhand 900 Mikunis shouldn`t be too hard or expensive either.
If it shows you need more parts than jets it`s probably cheaper.
+1 on greenmonster, it *shouldn't* be hard to find some old 900 headers AND someone who's upgraded to FCRs that still has the old mikunis laying around.

I would imagine you'd still want to grab a jet kit though with new emulsion tubes as i'm sure you'll need to tune a bit.
Hey Syd-Monster , I just so happen to have the very carbs you're looking for. ;D Bought them for my monster ( 95 m900) as spares but since I purchased the bike used already with mods....my carbs are jetted..........hence I dont need stockers as spares. PM me and I'll give U more details [email protected]
Thanks for all your help and advise guys. Instead I might wait until I can get a 900 Monster motor complete. Ill how my hunting goes, but its tuff around this time of the year as its, you know... xmas and stuff  - chris

ps, I lorv xmas.... ::)
