I have a Ducati Monster 400ie engine that is for a go kart. The wiring harness is from a Monster Sr4/1000. I bought it off someone who had done an engine swap in their bike (400 to 1000) and he had to keep the 400 harness. So I got a 1000 ECU and got it flashed with the 400 tune and with an immobiliser delete.

Heres a link to the wiring diagrams I am using Wiring Diagram - Ducati 2006 Monster S2R 1000 Workshop Manual [Page 463] for the 1000 diagram

Ducati Monster 400 620 Workshop Manual 2006 Onwards
for the 400

I am currently trying to run it without a dash as they are not cheap and it won't be useful for the kart anyway so that could easily be it. But if anyone knows if you can start it without the cluster plugged in.

I have the key jumped the way it says in the diagram, and I can hear the main relay click when I connect a 12v battery.

I have what I know to the best of my knowledge is the kick stand bridged (Most of the wiring on the bike matches the diagrams but not the kickstand), but it is the only 2 wire 3 pin connector on the whole bike.

I'm very unsure if I have the clutch switch bridged as the wiring diagram says that the colours are Blue and white (B/W) and black (BK) and the wires I have are blue and violet/purple (B/V) and black (BK). I wonder if this is a misprint in the wiring diagram or I have bridged the indicator or something (Ik it's not the indicator lmao but still.).

To hit the starter I am using the red and orange (R/O) and black (BK) but the orange is hella faded and i could be easily be bridging the wrong pins.

I also wonder if the ECU needs to prime the fuel pump before it can start because I currently just have an external fuel pump connected to the battery. So if anyone knows the pinout for the fuel pump that could be very useful.

I think the only other connectors that I don't have connected are lights and front are rear brake switches, the left handed switches, fuel pump as mentioned. Everything else is connected to something.

I'm a 15 year old girl and this is my first real engine experience lmao so I'm sorry if I'm missing something hella obvious, thank you sm for reading/helping.

Hi, that sounds like a fun project.
I take it that the starter motor won't turn over?
If the immobilizer is disabled the instrument cluster should not need to be attached to start it.
If the side stand switch has been bridged you shouldn't need the clutch IF you bridge the wires from the neutral switch.
Have you tried to bridge the starter solenoid to check that it is actually working?
Have you got a good earth to the engine and to the ecu?
What ecu do you have? 5.9M or 5AM?
What ecu was the 400 tune for? 5.9M or 5AM?
My S4 is a bit older than the 1000 but my horns have violet wires and my clutch switch has the blue wire (I just looked at the bike now).

When you say you have the key jumped do you mean that you have removed the ignition and converted it to a switch?
What about the actual starter button that would have been on the r/h switch block?

Thank you so for much for reading and helping,
Does that mean that with the side stand bridged and the clutch bridged it wouldn't start?
Yeah I primed the engine because I put new oil in it and with a wire an the starter and on the block and the starter did spin,
I have tried adding more grounds to the engine and I just have the ecu ground that it comes with but next time I will add a couple of alligator clips,
The ecu is a 5AM with a 400 tune on it, I'm not sure what 400 tune it is but they talk about it relatively universally, I'll ask my guy what it is.

Yeah, nah, I just jamed a bunch of unused solder and a paper clip to jump the wires the same way that it says in the wiring diagram.
Yeah if you look at the reddit post you'll see that i have photos of the 8 pin right hand switch plug that I'm bridging the red and the black wires on. The red wire could be red with an orange strip but I can't tell because it is quite faded so it could be just red.
Also even with the wiring for the ignition jumped when I jump the starter the injectors should fire and the spark plugs should spark if I'm correct in thinking that ducati monsters can be bump started like cars, I have seen people do it to Ducatis that aren't monsters but the monster might not likke being bump started, but this would mean that the bike is not just starting but also doesn't know that the ignitions is on.

If you have the side stand bridged and the gearbox neutral switch (back of motor) in neutral it should not matter if the clutch switch is open or closed.

Ducatis are notorious for not starting if the battery isn'tt' fully charged or you have bad earth connections.
My clutch wire plugs.

When you get the starter sorted out.
If the engine is turning over but not starting it may be due to the ecu being flashed and not the original ecu it was already running with, this might have put the throttle position sensor out of whack to the "new" ecu and it may need to be reset.

Its very true that I didn't have my battery all the way charge so defos try that. If I connect the neutral switch to ground will the ecu think that the bike is in neutral? How would I reset the TPS to the ecu? Thank you sosos much for your help and images :))

Just put the gearbox into neutral, if youre going to use the engine in a cart the neutral light would be a good feature to have.
How would I reset the TPS to the ecu?
The link in the last post covers it BUT you need to know which TPS you have.
Linear TPS is a mechanical adjustment and non linear is reset through the ecu with software.

I would concentrate on getting the starter wiring sorted first.
Once you get it to turn over then start thinking about how to get enough fuel pressure to make the injectors to work.

I personally would have gone for carbies over fuel injection but even that would create the headache of sorting out the ignition pickups.
