Ducati Monster 916 S4 Stator cover

243 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  moperfserv_5964
Just got my first Ducati, a 2001 916.
It is in need of a new statorcover, but I am unsure why.. the cover is cracked, around the bolts for the stator.

I have tried to measure if the crankshaft/flywheele is out of balance, but it is not easy to do.

Help?

Do you mean the bolts that hold the stator to the cover (internal) or the bolts that hold the inspection plate (external)?
The bike could have been gently dropped on that side?
If it was caused by something internal you should see gouges/ scrapes inside the cover or on the stator parts.
Here's a list of other ducs with the same part number
This is for grey covers, I think the high end (996R ect) had a green cover that was magnesium and should fit IF you can find one that's affordable.
If you get a second hand cover make sure it has the crank position sensor that is secured with one bolt like yours.
Earlier 916 engines had it secured with two bolts and some may have had a different stator.

Thanks for the reply!
The cover is cracked straight true.. (See photo)

I have found and ordered a new-used cover on Ebay, but not to keen on mounting it Just to ride one weekend before it crackes again 🤷🏼

I am unsure, but i think I see that the flywheele have been rubbing on the inside of the cover? (See photo nr.2)

Right in the "base" of the waterpump.
Anyone ever seen this before?

Looks like the outer part of the stator has been doing some chewing.
Have you removed the stator outer and flywheel from the crank?
Is it the original flywheel or a light weight one? Alloy flywheels have been known to fail.
Crank bearing failure could possibly cause this.
Does the bike look like it's been dropped on that side?
By looking at the orange sealant someone has been in there for whatever reason.
If you can't find something obvious like a loose or damaged flywheel or stator I would definately get the crankshaft runout measured, it would best to do this anyway as if you do repair it and the crank is bent you might have the same problem occur.
Have you pulled the spark plugs and hit the starter to see if there is obvious crankshaft runout?
Have not removed the flywheele yet, have ordered a tool to try and measure if there is any play in the flywheele. Will take of the flywheele and check the "tap" of the crank to when i get there.
But no, nothing I can see straight away with Just my eyes.. but again, the tolleranses Will be verry verry small?

Dont Know if it is the original flywheele or not, it could have been dropped but the seller diddnt want to say 🤷🏼
but the seller didnt want to say
That would be a HUGE red flag for me.
Kind of suggests that they know it's not an easy fix.
Keep digging into it to try and figure out whats wrong but personally I'd be keeping my eyes open for another desmoquattro for either a complete swap or as a source of parts.

Yes I kinda thoght the same thing🙈
But I got the bike for cheap, so swapping to a new-used motor is my next move if the tap of the crank is out of center

The race bikes of 851-995 era would crack that cover (especially the Magnesium ones) because that bearing is attempting to keep the end of the crank from whipping around. Which is a normal state for any engine. It's worse with lots of revs.
Since this isn't a Superbike race engine, I would suspect the main bearings as QLDs4 mentioned.
By the way, without that outrigger bearing controlling the end of the crank, it is whipping around.
