Dealer puts in 5W-40 Full Synthetic - Is anyone using 5W-40?

Had oil changed recently. The dealer used Repsol 5W-40, full synthetic. I was surprised, because when I had the 1st service done, they used Repsol 10W-50, full synthetic. I inquired further, and was told that it is better for the cold months ahead. I suppose my warranty is intact, because the dealer installed that oil. But, part of me wants to run out and drain the oil and replace with 10W-50.

Anyone else using 5W-40, full synthetic? Any horror stories? My bike is a 2006 Monster 620, street-ridden.

Don't "over analyze" the oil thing. Use good quality oil and change it (and replace filter) as scheduled. You won't have any problems. Ride it and enjoy it.

I know, I'm fighting the oil paranoia. I read a few posts about riders using 5W-40, but only a few. I plan to change oil about every 3,000 miles, so it probably won't matter. Like you, I love my bike, and wouldn't want to see it damaged from the "wrong" oil. I do trust my dealer/shop, so, as you say, I'm probably worrying about nothing, in practical terms.

Ducati recommends xW-40 for your bike anyway. The first number is not important with regards to protection.

I've run Silkolene 5w40(full syn) for the last 5 oil changes. No problems.

Thanks all - this is my first bike, and I'm trying to be conservative (paranoid?) on things. The manual does say 10-40, and was the reason for my concern. But, the 5 weight will probably be an advantage when the temps fall into the 40's F.

By the way, the bike seems to shift a bit better with the 5W-40.

I have put full syn car oil (5 W 40) in my Monster
I don't think it will hurt (i hope ;D)

it's because of the thread mentioned above that i just replaced the 20w-50 oil in my bike with 10w-40. 10w-40 is one of the acceptable oils listed in my m.o.m. i try to ride through the winter, so it's probably better for me to use a lighter oil anyway.

For whatever it's worth, "5W" is not listed in the owner's manual (download the PDF)... ::)

it's more important that you change it often than what kind of oil you put in it...

i use 15w-50 silkoline fully synthetic, works fine. i change it every 3k, thought i could go 6k according to the manual...

the manual states the various uses of oils per your local climate... out in coastal cal.. you could pretty much use anything.

George Morrison is our resident lub engineer. Do a search and and read-read-read. But the short version is pretty simple. Mobil 1 10w-40 4T (formerly MX4T recently renamed). Change oil and filter every 2k miles and you'll be in great shape.

Wal-mart carries it (at locations with car service bays), cyclegear, avlube.com and some autozones. Expect to pay between $8.50-$11 qt.
