Cold weather riding....*now with pictures!*

3326 Views 46 Replies 30 Participants Last post by  That Nice Guy Beck
I'm from Florida, and i've never ridden anywhere colder than Florida... that being said, I'm going to be riding a bike from Ohio, back down to FL, and its going to be a high of 47 and a low of 23 there. How do you northern guys deal with the cold weather? what do you guys wear?

I'm thinking of this:

Winter gloves
Thermal undies... two pairs of pants
Thick socks, military boots
Tshirt, military thermal sweater, a real sweater, and Spidi r-tech jacket (Would leather be warmer? I have an Astars TZ1)

Will I survive with this gear? or what do I need to do?

Re: Cold weather riding....

A lightweight windproof layer under your leathers will make a huge difference.
Re: Cold weather riding....

Ohio to Florida is about 850 to 1200 miles depending on your destination.
What hours of the day do you plan to ride?

If you tend to sweat alot, wear some baselayer that keeps moisture off your body (e.g. Patagonia Capilene 4) and/or something that traps your body heat (e.g. Patagonia wool 4). It make a huge difference, and they are very effective. Winter glove is a must, and consider also wearing glove lining that you use for skiing. And, don't forget balaclava.

If you plan to ride after dark, I would strongly recommend heated vest -- and read Ron Ayres: Going the Extra Mile.

Good luck on your ride.

Re: Cold weather riding....

I'm going from Columbus, Ohio... .to Tallahassee, FL. THen putting it on the back of a friends truck and going back down to St. Peterburg.

I'll be sure to find some sort of Balaclava.... and I have a chin guard and a breath guard for my SHoei, so that should hopefully keep it from fogging.

So windproof is the key here it seems. I have some gore-tex 2pc rain suits for hunting, that I might wear over everything.....

I was thinking of the Alpinestars Drystar gloves.... I wonder if they will keep me warm enough.

Re: Cold weather riding....

+1 on the heated vest, balaclava and fleece neck gaiter.

I've got a Gerbings vest, with that and some thermals and a sweater on underneath my non-perf Dainese cowhide, I'm good to go down to the low 30's.
Even with perfed Coretech gloves, my hands will get cold, but not painful frozen cold.

Watch out for ice...that under freezing temp at night and over freezing temp in the day is a bad recipe.
Re: Cold weather riding....

The only thing that takes me out in the cold is my hands. The very best gloves you can buy are no good in the twenty degree range at speed. Hondaline made some fleece lined gauntlet mittens from very supple leather that I used to use. Nothing, I mean nothing else will keep your hand so warm and toasty. No fingers in the mitten either. All fingers must stay together. You might think mittens would limit feel at the controls - not a problem.

Look into it.

Re: Cold weather riding....

So, you plan to ride after dark?
Why don't you apply for the Iron Butt membership while you are at it [laugh]
Seriously, all it takes is 1000 miles in 24 hours for the Saddlesore.
Re: Cold weather riding....

Check out some of the offerings from Aerostictch. They have an over-glove that might be helpful.

Also, check in on silk liners for gloves and socks. They are nice, thin and pretty warm. very nice under your gaultlets.

Also, remeber to interweave layers where possilbe to minimize cold air intrustions. For example, if you've got 2 pair socks and 1 long-johns you'd put on one pair of the socks, the johns over that. Then the 2nd set of socks goes over the johns.

The dry chemical hand warmers could come in handy too.
Re: Cold weather riding....

I rode all day today in the conditions you're describing. I don't really have any new info to add, but 1+ on a good set of gloves. I've never worn a heated vest, but after today I'm looking into one, so you may want to do the same. (I'll happily buy it from you at a discount when you get back to Florida ;D )

Re: Cold weather riding....

Icon barrier pants are awesome.
Thats all I have for the cold.It has to be 50 or below or you will cook.
Thats all you'll need for lower body, crashed in them once too not a scratch,me or the pants. [thumbsup]
Re: Cold weather riding....

no one suggested heated grips? ???

under $50 for most kits, installs in a couple hours.

Will keep your thick winter gloves warm in the cold and rain.

As a side note, I have been riding w/ jeans, a regular jacket and turtle neck and a summer gloves for the past couple days. here it's been in the low 40's to 30's with high winds...

Re: Cold weather riding....

It gets cold here in MN, too, and there's some good advice in this thread.

A heated, windproof vest will be very worthwhile for you. Widder and Aerostich come to mind.

For neck coverage, I wear a black ultrasuede-backed "wind triangle" from Aerostich. It's amazingly effective at covering the neck "gap" between the collar of your coat and the bottom of your helmet. You'll lose a lot of heat from your neck area -- I've known some riders who get painful "ice cream headaches" from having their neck exposed in the cold.
Re: Cold weather riding....

Cetme..get ready for a rude awakening on the meaning of COLD WEATHER RIDING!! Every mile gets longer and longer! Make sure you've got your ankles covered and your face layered under your helmet! A heated vest, gloves and grips will help too!
Re: Cold weather riding....

I've recommended this before. First Gear Thermogear suit. About $150. Quilted inside with fiberfill. I've worn mine in the 30s with just a t-shirt and light sweater underneith. No armor, but windproof, waterproof and warm.

Wow only $150? That's pretty good if it really works. So you are saying that you just sort of step into this suit with your normal clothes on (jeans and a light sweater) and then you are able to ride around in the thirties?

edit: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=5272 Its only $144 with free shipping here. If those reviews are accurate it might be a great solution! The only things I'm skeptical about are the waterproofness (no mention of goretex, so I'm guessing it's more accurately described as "water resistant"), and fit --It's hard to believe that something so cheap could be very carefully tailored.

The only downside is I won't get to show off my pretty 'DUCATI MECCANICA' leather anymore. ;D
Re: Cold weather riding....

You guys are nuts.

I'm in NorCal - if the weather hits 40, I ride... in my car.

Hope that helps ;D.
