Hey all,

I have an issue with my 2001 m750. I have about 5500 miles on her, and for the most part she's a dream. Lately, however, when I first start the engine, I get some rough starts. I occasionally get a cough or two on the first throttle of the morning. I know I'm getting close to engine service time, but I'd like to know if this is a common problem at this mileage. I'm under the impression that this is a valve problem, but I would like to hear if others know for sure. Thanks a ton

When I had this problem, I checked my plugs and made sure that they were still in good condition, no fouling and crap like that. Well this is when I learned that my bike ran rich and my plugs were a little fouled up causing a bad spark. Once I changed that things were looking up untill the leaves changed the ouside temps changed. If you don't have a heated garage or keep your bike outdoors, a little condensation could be building up in your fuel tank when the temps drop at night. Those coughs might be the bike coughing on water instead of gulping fuel.
If the bike is running rough at speed, it could be that the valves are ready to be checked or the throttle bodies need a little adjustment. Take her for a ride and see if she is smooth running all of the time, and if she is, I don't think that you have much to worry about.

Thanks for the response. I keep the bike in a garage at night, in San Diego, so I doubt that condensation is my problem. When the bike is up to speed, I encounter no problems. The problem occurs only when I'm warming up the bike.

I have the same bike, and I get a bit of that when cold. A liitle cough out of the airbox. I figure it's just because it's cold, I encounter NO problems just MINUTES after getting it started up.

I don't think it's a big deal.
