I just got the battery I ordered - it's basically the same thing as the OEM battery but a generic brand (read half the price). I put the electrolyte in. I connected the charger. Turned it on. Set it for 2 amps. Within 30 min it went into trickle mode (that's where it's sitting at right now - I guess I'll leave it like that all night). From the start it read the battery as having 95% capacity.

I thought a new battery needed to be completely charged up and that it would take 5-10 hours. Did I do something wrong?

Let it sit on the trickle charger over night, you'll be good to go.

The battery initially came with a plug on the exhaust port. When I put the acid the instructions were to remove the plug and replace it with a plastic tube. Now that it is charged, should I replace the exhaust plug that it came with or do I leave it open?

leave it open, the vent tube should run down and end underneath the bike The battery will produce gas when it charges, you need to let that escape.

It needs to be open, but make sure you DO put a tube one it. The previous owner of my bike had the tube come off and acid dripped on the frame and engine casing. It has produced stains that neither he nor I can remove.
